The bass heavy are definitely the better option, but the mids of the bass light pair are wonderful when the music has no real bass content.
 
Pick your music, then pick your cans to suit.

I prefer the bass light version. Its the better option for me. I sold my bass heavy in favor of it.

I cannot use the k1k's for very long anymore, I find them fairly fatiguing now. It's not the imaging but rather the high-frequency energy just bears heavily on my ears after a while.
 
There's probably some adjustments I can make to the chain, like the power amplifier.

New K1000 owner, s/n 8855 reporting.

Here is my audio setup:
Laptop -> Audioengine D1 DAC/Amp -> Trend Class T Amp TA-10.2 -> AKG K1000 + Kenwood SW-40HT subwoofer
 
I have now been listening for an hour and the headphones, sorry - earspeakers - are just disappearing on my head, it's amazing...
