No, what I am saying is, use Accuphase for classical, jazz and acoustic, but Trends will blow you away with the rest. For that money, you will be very surprised.

  i just got my k1000 #07056, it sounds quite a lot brighter than the hd800, the hd800 is thicker and smoother almost veiled in comparison, is this what you guys are hearing ? 

 
Add to that, unmusical and lacking a soul, and that would sum up my impressions of the HD800. Technically it does a lot well, but ultimately fails to engage. I'm not sure why so many around here worship the thing.

i can see why people would prefer the smooth fuller sound, the k1000 is very very trebly in comparison (although it may be because mine arent driven properly)

They arent, so, try to find used Trends Audio T10.1 or T10.2 to begin with, this amp is very fun, cost nothing and sounds very warmish and full.

Both my K100's are totally different. One being the bass heavy and the other being the bass light.
Neither touch the HD800 in quality.
 
This is using a balanced 80W class A amp, so no problems with power limitations.

To each their own. The HD800 is technically great but musically empty to me. I was hoping they could replace my K1000s, but that didn't work out.

I have a bass light k1000 and compared to the hd800 sometimes it does feel like treble overload , but for songs where the bassline isnt driving the music does sound fantastic, although i dont think im driving it optimally

I will say that the HD800 and K1000 need to be driven right to really excel. Both can sound pretty bad with the wrong system.

Anyone compare the LCD-X to the K1K and HD800? That's the only top tier can that I haven't heard but seems promising.

The HE-6 comes close, but the best all around headphone IMO is the Stax 007. It's not perfect and needs serious equipment to sound its best, but it's the best when properly driven. It's too pricey for me, however. I'd rather buy a pair of speakers for that price.

Other than the 007, my favorite is the K1K followed by the HP-2 still.

A few years ago I bought Sennheiser Hd800 when they were just released hoping that I could replace my K1000 ( I can not listen them more than an hour because the pain in the temples). But it did not happen. After a year of owning both I realised that I slowly stopped to listen the Hd800 at all. It sounded a little boring to me. Yes, the Hd800 reproduce more details, but don't sound that open, realistic and musical. So after a year the Hd800 were sold. But the K1000 are stil my favorite headphones. I hope the k812 will beat them but I highly doubt.

By the way, I mostly drive my K-1000 via a HDVD-800 and they match perfectly...

Unless the soundstage of the lcd x is Significantly larger than the claustrophobic LCD3 i really find it hard to believe it is more airy than the k1000

In my opinion such indirect comparisons are very difficult to do; especially if it is about sound, where people often do not agree with each other even when comparing gear directly... As such I can only recommend to check out the LCD-X to verify your conclusions. I really would like to know what your impressions would then be...
 
I find the difference to the LCD-3 quite remarkable, and...yes, also the X's soundstage I perceive being larger than the 3's.
