"3D swirlyness"....ha
I'm more of a tonality guy above all else. The EPH's treble funkiness automatically disqualified it for me.
If you have Win7, listen to one of the sample songs that came with the OS (Sleep Away by Bob Acri). I find the FXD and the GR07 (MKII) to have similar bass quantity, with the FXD80 maybe nudging ahead a little. Funny enough, I find the treble on the FXD to be a little more refined than the 07. I'm guessing it's because the mids take a step back, and give the treble some more breathing room.
I've spent the past couple days listening to the EPH-100 and FXD80 which haven't gotten much ear time in favor of the GR07/S500.
Personally, I put the EPH-100 and FXD80 on equal footing. Perhaps not fully burned in, but both have in excess of 100 hours each. The FXD seems to be just a bit more boomy and more of a V shaped thing overall but of course excels in the treble which is clearly a weak point on the EPHs. I find the EPHs a somewhat more coherent sound overall whereas the FXDs have more of a wow factor to them, but both have a decent amount of 3d swirlyness. Honestly if I had to sell one now it would be the FXD, but I'll hold onto it a bit longer and see if the sounds matures more.
I consider the GR07 a notch above, not as fun, but more even handed, faster/detailed (at least in the lower registers), etc.
