I've spent the past couple days listening to the EPH-100 and FXD80 which haven't gotten much ear time in favor of the GR07/S500.

Personally, I put the EPH-100 and FXD80 on equal footing.  Perhaps not fully burned in, but both have in excess of 100 hours each.  The FXD seems to be just a bit more boomy and more of a V shaped thing overall but of course excels in the treble which is clearly a weak point on the EPHs.  I find the EPHs a somewhat more coherent sound overall whereas the FXDs have more of a wow factor to them, but both have a decent amount of 3d swirlyness.  Honestly if I had to sell one now it would be the FXD, but I'll hold onto it a bit longer and see if the sounds matures more.

I consider the GR07 a notch above, not as fun, but more even handed, faster/detailed (at least in the lower registers), etc.

"3D swirlyness"....ha

I'm more of a tonality guy above all else. The EPH's treble funkiness automatically disqualified it for me.

If you have Win7, listen to one of the sample songs that came with the OS (Sleep Away by Bob Acri). I find the FXD and the GR07 (MKII) to have similar bass quantity, with the FXD80 maybe nudging ahead a little. Funny enough, I find the treble on the FXD to be a little more refined than the 07. I'm guessing it's because the mids take a step back, and give the treble some more breathing room.

Actually, no. I just A/B'ed them, and the treble is just more pronounced on the FXD because the mids really take a step back compared to the 07, and the overall tone is cooler in comparison.

I just tried this song to test the "fun-ness" on both phones. Funny enough, the GR07 MKII actually has more bass than the FXD80, but it's somehow more controlled.

Please ignore the gyrating men...it's a comedy sketch:

I haven't seen a plot of the GR07, but the 80 looks like the mids take as much as a 10 db dip compared to the bass/treble.

For me it may be a case of not properly volume matching.  I tend to find that I have the FXD at least the same volume as the GR07, sometimes slightly louder, but given the 20 ohm vs. 50 ohm impedance of each phone, not to mention my DF is most efficient at 32 ohms, probably means that the GR07 might be slightly quieter at what I find comfortable/apparent loudness.  It seems like the GR07 has more sub-bass regardless though, when a deep rumble comes up it really comes up on those.

Great space and sound with the FXD80!

So I've been listening exclusively to the FXD80s over the past couple days.  Probably added at least another dozen hours as well of heavy burn-in.

I definitely see their charms, and even with the fairly forward treble, they don't really fatigue after hours of extended listening.  Not sure if I'm hearing any changes in sonic signature.  Maybe the bass is a bit less bombastic, but I'd still classify this as a bass strong earphone.

I think for the next several weeks I'll rotate back and forth, a few days FXDs, then a few days GR07.

But regardless of any of this, really pretty crazy good for the price.

Have had the FXD70 for some time now and I have to say they definitely are the best in-ears under 100$ I've tried to date without using EQ. Supreme clarity and treble refinement with a really balanced and forward sound. It makes the EPH-100 and GR06 sound dull in comparison.
I think this in-ear should be the no1 recommendation for a beginners on a budget seeking an all-round in-ear.
Love how it sounds with cymbals, drums and strings. Amazing with all music with instruments. I think this is a better sounding headphone than HA-S500 for sure.

It sounds more expansive and focused using crossfeed and effects in J River.
The violin in this Riz Ortolani classic sounds terrific.

This sounds even better.

would anyone here prefer the fxd80 over the fx700?

Hmmm? I prefer them over the FX700 simply because the JVC woods mids are too recessed for my liking. The FX700 definitely has more bass, and I think the treble is quite a bit more piercing to the ears than the FXD80. The D80, on the other hand, has beautifully forward mids and vocals. The sound is more balanced in the FXD80. Comparing overall quality of sound, it's about a draw to my ears (meaning it really depends on what type of sound signature do you prefer).

I wonder if you'd feel the same way if you'd heard the FX700 more recently and/or A/Bed them against each other. Thinking of getting a pair myself. A pair of FXD80s that is. *cackles maniacally*

It's been a while since I've heard the FX700's but I'm confident that I prefer the FXD80's over them. I can't add too many details from memory except I remember the bass being much too prominent on the FX700 comparatively. Listening to the GR07 mkII now though and it may be pulling ahead of both of them...

Nice sounds with the more neutral FXD70

This FXD70 is still amazing me each day I listen to it. The clarity and detail is like crazy, especially in the mids and lower highs. I'm hearing details in guitar playing (electric) like never before, but the bass is just right. Now I know it's really a different beast altogether than the FXD80. Each one has qualities I like better than the other one.

Which one do you think is more "fun" or engaging ?
