Yep, I am using the ECC 2 adaptor for the 5670 and 2C51 tubes. That adaptor doesn't open up too many tube options (5670/2C51/396 only, I think), but I really like the way these tubes sound, especially with the DX1000s.

I am certainly curious about the Mullard ECC32 given your experience and Mikhail's comment, although they also seem to be pretty darn hard to find. The site quoting them for $200 is out of stock.

My output tubes are Bendix 6080s. Mikhail originally sent Tung Sol 5998s when I bought the amp. Since then, whenever I ask him for other recommendations, he invariably sings the praises of the Bendix 6080s. Like the Mullard, they are expensive tubes. Mikhail usually starts off a conversation quoting them at $200 each but ends the conversation at a lower price---he's definitely not a hard-driving businessman.

In any case, the 6080s are great sounding tubes, certainly better than the 5998s. At the same time, be forewarned that output tubes don't seem to affect the sound signature quite as much as driver tubes can.

I just ordered a Bada PH-12 to replace my SP PPX3. I can't wait to try out the DX1000's with my new amp. It has a switch on the back for low/high, so I think it will finally be able to use the pot past 9 o'clock on low.

I've heard good things about the Bendix 6080, but my experience with other 6080's (RCA's, Raytheons), is that they are less warm than the 5998's (which are already less warm than 6AS7G's). As such, I haven't really been willing to shell out the money for them - I don't want any less warmth in the extreme than I have currently. If I had cooler sounding output tubes I would have to go back to the RCA VT-231 input tube to put some warmth back.

Anyway, it sounds like you've already hit on a nice tube combo for the DX1000's. That's awesome!

I will say that the DX1000s are system-sensitive. My amp is a Single Power Extreme. I had to do some tuberolling to make the DX1000s shine. With some tubes, the bass is admittedly somewhat boomy and the overall SQ is a bit "syrupy".

The best input tubes I have found are the Hytron 5670 and the Tung Sol 2C51. The 5670 is a terrific tube for the DX1000s, creating tremendous detail, soundstage and dynamics. The 2C51 is also a great tube for the DX1000s, offering somewhat bigger soundstage at the expense of speed. Overall the Hytron 5670 is my current favorite. If anyone has any other tube suggestions for the DX1000s, please let me know (Skylab?)

What tubes have you tried .... and what output tubes are you using?

Right now, I am using the CBS/Hytron 5670WA as the input tube and the Bendix 6080s as output tubes. That's my current favorite setup with the DX1000s. The Tung Sol 2C51 is my second favorite input tube. (That tube is quite nice with the DX1000s, but seems to be especially suited for enhancing the soundstage of the K340s.)

Other input tubes I have tried: the CBS/Hytron 6SN7GT and the Sylvania 5670. The Sylvania sounds OK, but offers less detail than the CBS or Tung Sol. The 6SN7GT sounds a bit "flat" relative to the 5670/2C51.

On Skylab's recommendation, I pulled the trigger on the Mullard ECC32 yesterday, and am awaiting the arrival of a few other 5670s (GE and JAN.) I think this may be a case of overkill, but I am struck by how much the sound signature varies across manufacturer, so I am continuing to experiment.

I also am waiting for an ECC 1 adaptor and a couple of tubes that Mikhail recommended I try out.

The only other output tube I have tried is the 5998s. That is a nice sounding tube, but I like the 6080s better. The 5998s are very fast sounding, but are lean compared to the 6080s.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

That's surprising as the Bendix 6080s sound like a warmer tube than the Tung Sol 5998s, which seem faster/leaner to me and a possibly a little rolled off at lower frequencies. Mikhail originally recommended the Bendix 6080s for my K340s, but I have to say that all of my headphones sound better through the 6080s than through the 5998s.

i have a pair of ultrasone pro750, and have been eyeing these for SOME time now. i listen to dance music (drum n bass -> techno -> house in that order) almost exclusively. if i'm not playing dance music, then i'm listening to irresponsible rap. i LOVE the way the 750's make these genres sound; would the dx1000's do it for me, too?

FWIW, I sold my Proline 2500 after I got the DX1000. It does everything well, and has a great bass presence that most ultrasone owners will appreciate.

i've listened to the 2500's vs the 750's and the bass isn't as authoritative on those as they are on the closed models. your comment sure is helping to sway me to the dx1000 though

I guess I should mention that there is more bass here than with the 2500. There is a lot more weight, as well as more volume on the really low notes.

I wonder why you do not just skip right to the ED9's?

i've been considering it heavily (the e9, or actually, the e11 or whatever replaces it), but i've also been eyeing the dx1000 as it's main competition.

The ED9 along with the R-10 and the L3000 are the only closed headphones I am still yearning to hear. I will never get the last two due to the price, but I myself am still curious about the ED9. I am going to the national meet, and I will make sure to try the ED9 along with my DX1000 out of the my amp (it has two HP jacks).

You will not regret your purchase. Just wait until you wrap those big fat muff cushions around your head and turn up the sound.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I heard them once before and I really liked what I heard. It is actually at higher volumes that I am hoping the bass is a bit deeper and more controlled in the mids than my Darths (which do a lovely job at lower volumes and for less bassy music.) I also like the reputed synergy with tubes as I am thinking of moving even further that direction from my Millet Hybrid - maybe a Doge from HK in August.
