JVC HA-SZ2000/1000 Impressions Thread

I bought my SZ1K's on amazon, they also sell the 2K's. They don't seem to be selling for under 200, I don't think they are ever going to fall down more in price cause its already been like 3 months since I bought my cans and the 2K's seem to still be sticking around 200+

Does someone mind listening to these tracks with the SZ2000 and letting me know how they sound? It would be much appreciated. I'm trying to ignore these headphones, but I can't get them off my mind.

Since I have the SZ2000 on my head atm I'll oblige.
Thanks for sharing, they were fun to listen to.
I''ll give you my impressions, hopefully you don't mind a comparison, and I can't remove personal bias, sorry.
On my desk I have these and a 1st gen T1. Both are re-terminated to have a balanced xlr connector. I run both through a PHA-3. Both have their own custom parametric eq. settings in EqualizerAPO that I have made for my ears.
I enjoyed all the tracks with both my T1 and SZ2000 equally for fun.
For clarity, the T1 won with and without EQ on all tracks, not really a surprise.
I was expecting the SZ2000 to clearly present the low-volume bass on the first track from 0:15 to 0:20, but while it reproduced it, it was barely there, marginally worse on the T1.
With EQ on it was as whole other story. The SZ2000 pressured my skull with utter disregard for my being as I would have expected. The T1 with EQ on managed to produce the sound nicely(not viscerraly).
For reference the EQ on the T1 has +25db from 14Hz to 20Hz(almost no other eq settings though). The SZ2000 has a pile of points along the whole frequency spectrum starting at +14db at 12Hz because it can go that low. With EQ I can hear the T1 flat to 27Hz then drops off down to about 20Hz then is silent. The SZ2000 I can hear flat down to 20Hz then drops off down to about 15Hz then I feel air motion down to 12Hz then I hear the driver puffing air below that.
Like I said earlier, the EQ config is for my ears - to me that means a sinusoid wave with equal perceptual level down as low as the headphone permits.

Try this track on for size. Especially at 3:33. The SZ2000 with EQ pressurizes my skull like someone is trying to toilet plunger both my ears at the same time... which is probably exactly what it is doing minus the toiled part.

I'll end off with saying this, no eq = unacceptable sound for me from the SZ2000. Meaning that if you don't plan on doing any EQ stay away from these headphones, they will suck(unless you love highly bloated mid-tones and un-balanced sub-bass).
If you plan on EQing them, you can probably get them to your liking depending on your EQ options.
Good luck.

Thanks for the observations. I plan on using bass boost and/or eq to get the most out of these.

So how did the sz2k do with the quick bass on the Crop Circles track (last one)? Was it a jumbled mess, or are they fast enough?

Hmm, I should have addressed that earlier. I'm now packing to catch a flight and won't be back at my desk until the Monday after US thanks giving so I won't be able to give you an accurate answer on that until then.
I remember that I was considering to mention that I enjoyed the last track more with the T1 than the SZ2000 mostly because the bass depth felt close enough and of the wonderful mid and higher frequency detail/clarity on the T1. That said the clarity in the bass region was definitely there with the T1 and it's speed could have been why I liked it better. Unfortunately it was a quick a/b and I can't remember a noticeable bass line difference between the two. I certainly enjoyed it on the SZ2000. I would guess that it is mostly fast enough but that isn't a real comparison. Sorry I can't give you more details at the moment. If you are looking for more than a subwoofer on your ears and can wait I'll do more careful listening when I get back. Oh and let's not forget that the stock pads are abysmal. I couldn't wear them for more than 20min before feeling like I bought a POS that would never be used. Search this thread and you'll find lots about pad replacement. Imo a must. I use the pads from a donner JVC 55x(with extra padding) that was cheap on ebay.

Cool, sounds good. I've got a pair of fostex on the way... if the bass on them is better than my mdr-7520,I'll probably be satisfied with them and not buy the jvc. I have some hm5 pads from an older purchase if I need them. Thanks again.

Edit: fostex purpleheart came in and they're rocking my world. No need to comment further regarding the tracks I submitted.

I been doing a lot of reading on this thread. Such great info here! For everyone that have both the sz2K and also the sz1k, I'm heavily considering these 2 JVC models, as well as the NAD Viso HP50, SoundMagic HP150, DT770 and DT880. I have a substantial home theater and am a bass addict, so I do want to get a relative experience. My music choice is more of industrial rock. I also like metal bands that borrow and implement sub bass, samples, and such, from House, Dub style music.  I'm searching for a can that can really plummet and deliver that sub bass impact, while retaining a fast solid distinguishable kick drum, with guitars front and center, with lush vocals, and a nice sparkle to keep the detail of vocals and guitars raw and alive with energy. I don't like anything veiled, don't like a bloated mid bass or harsh on the high end. Simple right! I wish.. So, are any of these cans for me? I'm cool with getting an amp if needed.

You have just entered the SZ zone, you have left what you thought was reality, and now have arrived in center of true reality. The reality is my friend, that the SZ1K and SZ2k are the kings of bass. The problem with these headphones however is that they are not plug and play by any means. You can do that if you want, but you won't receive the full potential of these cans by doign so. First of all you need an amp. If you are going portable, the Fiio A3 or Fiio E12 will provide more then enough amping power to vibrate your skull cavity. If to be used at home stationary, I recommend something like the Schiit stack to power them.

The other thing your going to need is an equalizer. Both software and hardware EQ's will do, but you will get better performance from a hardware Equalizer, as you won't be trying to overcompensate for a poor DAC. Botht he SZ1K and SZ2K have excellent midrange out of box, so no adjustments are necessary. However, the sub base range from 65 hertZ and lower, must be razed by at least +10DB and this will bring that juicy delicious bass that will take away your virginity. :p

Also, if you want vocals to come out a little better including guitars, you have also got to raize the highest range. I recommend 3K +2DB 6K +6DB 8K +10DB 16K +10DB. Also, with settings such as these, you will have to drop your gain down to at least -16DB or you will hear what sounds like a dying animal. I will repost my equalizer snapshot for reference. Also please note that both these cans do burn in. Don't push them too hard till the first 30 hours, then really crank them up. Sound will reach ultimate sound bliss when the cans reach 300 hours of burn in.

Make sure your prepared, because this experience is nothing like past can's you've had, these will actually make you feel. Its a true nut popping experience like no other, mark my words, your about to have an adventure! :D

Im not sure you can just buy the driver you need. Plenty of 50mm drivers on aliexpress but they will be different from the JVC's 55mm...

I feel like the SZs have your soul now.  which be cool 'n ****.

So correct me, do you own both or just the SZ1000s?  I couldn't recollect.

So your post prompted my latest purchase-wanna-say-hayyyy!!! I bought deeez sheet, and dis sheet eez gud.

As you said, the FiiO A3s.  Man, what a friggin' deal.  60 buckaroos.  And er, uh, I was kind of NOT expecting them to pump more juice than my Q1 (still looove) or E10K (still molest nightly).  I'm a FiiO whore, btw, anyway, soooo

First test and main reason I bought the A3 was just to keep a more dedicated amp on my (STILL) kicking ipod nano 7th gen (like 4 years old??) . And DAAAYYYUUUUM.   I crapped my pants.  It was great.

The A3 is not in another galaxy difference, but imho, it is pretty significant or obvious, but then again the specs speak to the juice.  Fantastic, I haven't been this happy and sexually fulfilled since that one time I had sex.

that Realistik EQ looks dope.
