I've noticed time and time again that once I import a file to itunes that the midrange consistently gets attenuated and instrumentals seem more emphasized.  My EQ is set to flat, and I'm playing my music through my macbook and fiio E17 via USB. The issue remains even when I upsample to 96000 with a 24bit depth.

I know this is an itunes issue, because when I play the same sound files through ableton or audacity the midrange dip disappears.

This is very, very annoying. Does anyone know what the issue is and how I can fix it?

I suggest finding a different method for organizing and playing music. I've used foobar2000 for years now and love it. Has hundreds of plugins and is easy and simple to use.

I've had the EXACT same issue with itunes.  I only use it when necessary and use foobar most of the time.

Obviously I never found a fix.

Probably the Sound Enhancer was left on...

I've not experienced your problem. I have compared  music downloaded to my iTunes library with the same material filed in Foobar and MediaMonkey and it sounds the same when volume level is adjusted. I like iTunes for a multitude of reasons: Genius, Genius Mixes, Radio, and iTunes Store. It's all good and seamlessly integrated. Perhaps you have a user adjustable setting which is interfering with your pleasure.

FIXED boom.  Turns out I turned on the Itunes sound enhancer from before my audiophile days.  All the issues instantly disappeared.

The SQ enhancer seems to put more emphasis on the upper treble and and upper and lower bass, it gives the impression of the instruments being moved forward.  As a result, the midrange recesses.

It's in the playback section of preferences, for those who want to check it out.

I get to say "I told you so" and laugh at iTunes for having a "sound enhancer" in the first place
