Introducing the HIFIMAN Sundara Closed-Back

Aug 8, 2022 at 3:13 PM Post #76 of 226
I've not heard the R7DX so I can't comment on it, regarding the ship date we have not gotten a specific week or month but as soon as we have more up-to-date information from Hifiman we'll update the page!
Just heard back from my dealer that HiFiMan has pushed their production date by a couple months so I've cancelled my order and got a refund. Availability is looking like end of October/early November.

Ahhh that's a shame, ok I'll buy a dac first then LOL.

Maybe Sundara Closed I'll shoot for Christmas present, or Black Friday purchase????? LOL.

Thanks for the update though, much appreciated!

Yeah. I was thinking the same. I'll most likely still order them but I wasn't guaranteed to be in the queue for first shipments in October so I'll hold off until Christmas.

Ok, I will order the open back instead, they are the best I've heard at the price point, the only one that I heard is better are the Ananda Stealth, but they are worse in comfort, the Araya was to bright for my liking.

The XS is also really nice

I have no choice because my wife complains she can hear my music (her desk is very close by), and I've been waiting for Sundara Closed forever.

So I guess now I wait some more...... lol.

We are very excited to introduce our new product Sundara Closed-Back!
New Model Adds Stealth Magnet Technology and Beechwood Ear Cups to Audiophile Favorite

The Sundara Closed-Back headphone (SRP: $399) is highlighted by elegant, hand-assembled beechwood ear cups that serve to isolate the listener from background noise and emphasize the natural bass response of the original recording. Designed by HIFIMAN engineers, the ear cups offer the dual benefits of exceptional sonics and stylish good looks.

A recent HIFIMAN creation, Stealth Magnet technology is an integral part of the headphone’s sonic output by significantly reducing reflections and diffractions that are detrimental to sound quality

Like the open-back version, the new Sundara Closed-Back features our ultra-thin Super Nano diaphragm, which is up to 80% thinner than diaphragms in more common headphones. The design results in an ultra-wide frequency response -- 6Hz-50kHz -- with sonic detail that reveals the fine points in well-recorded music.

Adds Dr. Bian: “Sundara is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘beautiful’ and ‘noble,’ both of which are accurate descriptions of the new headphone design, inside and out. Music lovers will enjoy the new Sundara Closed-Back as much if not more than the original open-back model.”

Specifications:
Frequency response:6Hz - 50kHz
Sensitivity: 98dB
Impedance: 20ohm
Weight: approx. 432g

Sundara over-ear planar headphones will be available from HIFIMAN dealers and our official online store in August.

The headband of these seems identical to the open version of the Sundara.

Has anything been done to address the creaking sound that occurs when flexing the headband?
Has anything been done to address the scratching of the paint around the inner graduation while adjusting the headband sliders?

I heard it a little bit in London, at CanJam. My first (and only)impressions are very positive. I should have mine at the weekend for a review.

Interesting. I've had a pair of opens for about 2 years and mine don't creak at all.

Hello. Can Sundra Closed Back be driven by Apple dongle ? Does it need an amp ?
Likely depends on how you define "drive" and "need" ;) Based on my experience with the open's (which are about 4db less sensitive) I can get them to a completely usable moderate home listening volume with my iPhone 12 pro. And they sound...decent. But they really don't come alive like they do on a good amp. Since the closed's are slightly more sensitive you will get a tad bit more volume, but I can't imagine you'll be eking out anywhere near their full potential without more power.

So you really have to consider your use case. If you have even an inexpensive amp that you'll be using most of the time, with only occasional apple dongle usage, these could be a great option. If you'll be using them mostly/exclusively with the lightning dongle then I'd recommend looking at more sensitive (likely non-planar) headphones.

One of my friend went to a store and demo Utopia recently, and he's mind blown. But he's a dongle guy so he's also like can Utopia be driven by a dongle? :joy:

I'd like to think it's probably possible, but also probably a waste of potential possibly.

But probably less of an issue on Sundara Closed vs say like...... Utopia lol.

I can wait for the reviews......but at initial glance they look.....odd? Maybe it's just bc Im so used to what the Sundara looks like but it def does look a little frankensteiny like they just kinda mish mashed a bunch of parts together. Could just be the color of the wood against the black headband.....
