Introducing Shanling M8T - New Flagship Portable Android Player with Tubes

Jan 15, 2025 at 2:24 AM Post #151 of 520
Hey all,

I’m wanting to transfer files to the M8T, but I can’t figure out how to put it into FTP or ADB. Is it possible to transfer via USB on this device?
It's similar to other Android devices and phones.

After connecting USB cable, swipe down from top of the screen to view notifications.
There you will see "Charging over USB", click on it and switch to "File Transfer".
Now it will show up as a new drive, under "Shanling M8T" you will see both internal memory and inserted MicroSD card.

Shanling Have any question about our players? Just PM me or send me email. Stay updated on Shanling at their sponsor profile on Head-Fi.

Thanks! I figured it out. Because I’m using a MacBook, I had to configure device under developer options.

More impressions please! I am particularly interested in what the noise floor is like with sensitive iems like Clara.

I should have mine in a few hours but unfortunately my Clara Ti is with a friend so he can demo it.

Delivery! I only got 10 minutes with it before I had to leave but initial impressions are very positive.

I can imagine how much dust, small debris and crumbs it will collect through the holes in the top grille over time when carried in pockets outdoors. 😏 I'm also curious how hot the player's body gets after playing music for an hour while tubes on with harder to drive headphones. 🤔

Now, this question bothers me too.
Maybe, there’s an option of fast grill replacement for cleaning is acceptable.

Hi @Shanling , I have noticed a bug (?) when toggling between PO / LO and how the gain is affected.

If I am on PO with low gain and I swap to LO it automatically puts the DAP into high gain, and when I swap back to PO the gain stays on high.

Low gain on tube and op has a little bit of noise that is higher pitched like electrical interference. Compared to sp3000t, it is quieter. But the higher pitched might be more annoying than just straight hiss. If clara is your main iem, I would not pick this dap.

Day 2 and I am loving this DAP so far!

The overall sound is warm tilted neutral, but not as warm as the original M8 (from memory), SP3000T, or N6iii C201 card. Timbre to my ears is very natural while being well balanced between an organic sound and staying revealing and dynamic as well. It's not too smooth, not too edgy... sort of right in the middle for me. There is also no turbo mode which was present on some of their others daps, or I am blind and can't find it.

Transistor mode (SS) - most punchy, dynamic, hardest hitting... definitely better if you want a more neutral but slightly warm tilted sound with a defined edge and solid clarity as well. This also sounds significantly louder than the tube output so I have to drop the volume down quite a bit on this.
Triode tube mode - slightly warmer and fuller than transistor with a smoother and more relaxed upper mid range, reminds me of the hybrid tube mode on the SP3000T in that it feels like a SS/tube hybrid. (my personal favorite as of this moment)
Ultra Linear tube mode - the warmest, fullest, and slowest sounding of the bunch. Sounds great for more mid focused music but for faster more PRaT type music I find it can be a little on the slower side.

The diff between SS/tube modes is easily audible, and the difference between Triode/UL is a little more subtle but it's definitely there. All modes have great dynamics and a pretty well separated and layered soundstage but overall it is still more on the intimate side and more in-head rather than staging further out of head. It's probably not as spherical or holographic as the SP3000T. My DX340 is also out with a friend but for my ears the M8T stronger (more preferable for me) bass response, warmer and lusher mid range, and a bit more edgy and airy treble. It's not as smooth overall as the DX340 DAC nor does it stage as big either.

I briefly tested the LO today and it still sounds fairly good to me despite it just being software based. I do feel from a pure LO circuit in the SP3000M or DX340 I can benefit with extra spacing/layering/depth but it is not a drastic difference.

Overall so far I am super impressed with this, and I really am struggling to believe that this was only $1499... really happy with this buy. I'll report back over time if anything changes but so far so good :)

Awesome. Thanks for sharing this. I've been eyeing, close to pulling the trigger, on the DX340. I was fortunate to pick Mr. Hurst's M9+ which will be arriving tomorrow. In short order I'll be able to fan the flames or quench the lust for a new DAP, which now, thanks to you Mr aaf evo, places this offering on the list I was trying to shrink. I really need to stay off these forums and learn to be happy with what I've got - yeah, right!

M9+ DX340 and M8T are all great DAPs. I’m sure you’ll be happy with any of them!

Agree. With regards to the transistor mode, I listen at about 10 clicks lower than I do on tube. It is lulling and similar enough to the M8. And yet still very transparent. Perhaps that is the biggest improvement over the M8. But still closer to the M8 than the M9 or M9+.

Yes. It is shockingly good value in this day and age. I did not quite believe the price point when @Uncle Wilson of Jaben SG told me what it was. And no regrets adding this to the flagship Shanling DAPs I have. :)

The only caveat I have with the iBasso DAPs is the option to have separate batteries for digital and analog when the digital battery runs out way faster than the analog battery.
