When we released our flagship M9 portable player at the end of last year, it represented a big step forward for our Android DAPs. Coming with a significantly more powerful CPU, allowing us to upgrade to the Android 10, offering more memory and all packed into an aluminium body featuring new “Wave” design.

Now we are going to squeeze these new features into a smaller body with the Shanling M7!

It features the same 5-inch Full-HD screen as our older M8, but in a sleeker “Wave” design, measuring 129 x 78 x 20 mm at 312g. On the inside, it adopts advancements from the M9, including the single-piece aluminium inner body and the single-board integrated acoustic design.

Audio circuit of the M7 is based around ESS Sabre ES9038PRO DAC. The flagship model of the ESS line, power hungry 8-channel beast and DAC that we started to really like last year, when we implemented it into our top-of-the-line CD Player CD3.2 (21). All the experience of adapting it into a classic Hi-Fi machine helped us in optimizing its performance for the M7.

The ES9038 PRO is run in its current-mode operation, combined with a matching ESS ES9311 voltage regulator, a power circuit adapted from the M9 and our in-house developed I/V conversion stage. When paired with our OP + BUF amplifier architecture, which was further optimized for the M7, we are actually getting our best measuring portable player so far.

MSRP 1249 USD/Euro

Wow, it even looks better than M8.

128db dynamic range is insane!! Same SoC as M9. 6gb of ram...3.5 and 4.4mm hard wired means no worry about socket issues. I think this is an absolute winner. And the price is perfect to compete with the likes of iBasso and Hiby. DSD512 and 16x unfolding?!?! Take my money!!! Where can I pre order.

not to mention better DR and S/N than the M9..... say what?

Shorter & narrower than the M6 Pro 21, but thicker (129 x 78 x 20 mm vs 133.5 x 71 x 17.5 mm). May need to get these in my hands; my M6Pro21 is at the upper limit of what I consider portable.

@Shanling

(1) Any chance of seeing this, or any upcoming model, offering Roon Ready? (streaming to android roon app limits to 44.1, would be great to stream high res into your DAP as possibly on A&K DAPs)

(2) Would would be the Wattage output into 300 Ohm if you can share?

thanks so much - this looks like an amazing product!

Does the M7 just a M9 shrink in size or it cut some other stuffs as well?

Just a few differences:
M9
  • DAC – 2x AKM AK4499EQ
  • Memory – Ram 8GB, ROM 256GB
  • Amplifier – AD4610 & BUF364A & OPA1612
  • Output Power – Single-ended 460 mW@32Ohm // 920mW@32Ohm Balanced
I believe the M9 is still very much the flagship DAP in the Shanling lineup as well as being a limited model due to the limited availability of the AKM chips. It wouldn't make sense for them to release a cheaper model that competes with the flagship (at double the price), especially when the M9 seems to be well received.

I am curious how the M7 fares against the M8.
