Introducing ONIX Overture XM5 - First Portable Player from ONIX

I own both, the M5 sounds brighter than the Onix, the Onix goes deeper in the Bass, Stage is bigger in the M5, M5 is more neutral, personally I have more fun listening to the Onix, I use only closed Headphones and I found the Onix more suitable with Heaphones being much more powerful.

@Shanling I am wandering how hard would it be to implement solution on Onix for browsing music on network storage - maybe it can be suggested or asked on the developer side - my usage is:
I have NAS in my network with lots of music on it and I usually access it with other devices in my home using smb (samba) or WebDAV servers. On Android few apps already support this like usb player, so I was wandering if there were any talks to add this feature to Onix in the future.

I demoed the M5u as an upgrade to my M1 Plus and was set to buy, then saw they had the XM5. I could have been happy with the SQ of either, but the slightly smaller form of the XM5 and the outputs + volume on the bottom were deciding factors for me. A seeker design is always nicer in the hand, but I like the old-school style.
Years ago daps switched to outputs on the top, which for me just doesn't work when either in the pocket or on a surface like a desk. I'm actually really thrilled to have a dap with these features at the bottom.
It's a really good looking device - the gold and black give it a luxury look, finished off with the beautiful case.

It has nothing to do with Android. It's standalone Linux based system Shanling has been using since 2018.

It's the same system as used on Shanling M5 Ultra. We provide ONIX with our software for their machines.
May I ask if you have a new flagship DAP in development other than M8T? I absolutely love my M9+ but looking to upgrade to something…

Also is the battery replaceable on the overture XM5?

no you need to send them back in 5ish years when they start to die to be replaced

Not exactly true, it's also possible to purchase just the battery and have it replaced by local service or do it yourself if you trust your device repair skills.
Some of our distributors also offer battery replacement out of warranty(but normally only on units that were purchased from them).

What happens if you buy the player 2nd hand off someone, will they let you pay for the service?

We offer out-of-warranty repairs for all units, no matter if second handed or if purchased from some scummy Online sellers.
As long as you understand that it will be paid process, we will help out.

Not in current plans for MTouch system.
We recommend using 3rd party apps to act for DLNA Controller, with XM5 acting just as DLNA Renderer.

Not the correct thread to discuss this, but No, we have currently no flagship above M8T in plans.

Hello, I had a conversation with a friend, he claimed that totl desktop chips like the es9039 aren't powered well by daps.

I wonder what's your take on this? from my perspective there's bound to be a benefit in using a top tier desktop chip, even if not to it's full 100% capabilities, over something like quad cs chips (to equalize channels)

I had some time to kill so I thought I would check out this thread to see how the XM5 compares to the M5 Ultra. Clearly it is a step in sound and price of course. But it would seem paying more money does not get you a better software experience. I have been trying to figure out what the M in MTouch stands for. Sometimes I think it stands for Missing (as in that feature is missing from our DAP's), Maybe (as in maybe we will add that feature in the future, but don't count on it) or Mediocre (as in our DAP's sound great but the software is mediocre). Depening on what you are talking about any of the 3 would work. The question is, can a DAP live on sound quality alone?

Is it getting to the point that Shanling should do what Cayin did with the N3Ultra and switch to a lockdown version of android to fix the issues and missing features with the MTouch OS? At least when you get to the level of the M5 Ultra and the XM5? At least it should address the 20,000 track limit as I don't think Android has a file limit.

I saw your post on the M1 Plus thread.
I come from a long line of Sony daps going back to their second generation, and they have always been a solid smooth flowing experience for scrolling. When looking at other brands I just assumed that this was just a standard for non-Android daps. I do often find it a frustrating sluggish experience that lets an otherwise excellent dap down (also M1+). I'm hoping there may be some improvement.
The selling points over the Sonys are the USB-C, instant start up with no database build, and drop down menu for quick access.

Yes it is to bad Sony stopped making non-Android DAP's. I would love to see what Sony could make today if they went back to non-android DAP's. The A55 came out 7 years ago so I am sure Sony could make a Linux based DAP that would easily outperform the Shanling and Hiby DAP's. Even today the ancient A55 outperforms these MTouch DAP's in many areas especially the screen quality and the usability.

Sadly it's like a drug. Sony just doesn't hit the same way as XM5.

I always find the unbalanced outputs of the Sonys like the A55/A306 to be a bit underwhelming.
Due to the hefty weight of my WM1Z I seldom use it, opting for my smaller and/or lighter daps in most cases. After buying my XM5 in Japan I was thinking to sell my WM1Z, but when I got home and compared, the 1Z still aces the XM5 is several areas of sound.
I still haven't used my 1Z since as my XM5 is still a superb sounding dap, slightly smaller, half the weight, ergonomically perfect (output, volume and buttons), and sexy as.

I wish they put an Android OS on both M5 Ultra and the XM5, to see how the sell goes.

It would shift the devices significantly, as they would need different screens and system platforms, pushing their pricing significantly higher.

We already offer a range of other devices for users demanding Android.

From the other hand, It’s nice to have pure music player, that works with offline library, and concentrated on audio quality, without all that modern bells and whistles.
