Introducing CL2 Planar (Impressions Thread)

I went back to the Ortofon tips, the balanced cable and DX200 Ti / AMP8 and... oh my, burn in has taken them to another level! The Ortofon tips have the deepest insertion and this seems to be key here...

The level of clarity and transparency is nothing short of amazing, and the soundstage has gone "pop" and gained a lot of width and depth.

Again there is something of the Flamenco in there, such precise imaging and the level of detail while remaining musical is really something to behold...

After I went custom I swore I wouldn't go back to universal but I am glad I did :p

What is the better sound signature. Pro tips or ortofon?
Also which are more comfortable?

That honestly sounds a little too good to be true, since Flamenco is on top of resolution and detail retrieval, even among TOTL iems. Would you put CL2 in the same tier as the other TOTL iems in terms of technical capabilities(such as U18, EE Zeus and VE8 just to name a few)? Either way the current impressions looks amazing and I definitely need to hear them!

Only Orofon tips I can find are the replacement ones on amazon, knock offs.
Anyone ever used them? Are they comparable?
Thanks :)

130 hours of burn in, and the mids are smooth as honey. Every note is dripping with intention and weight.

Well I purchased them a loooong time ago but it was spare parts not bundled with IEMs. I had both white colored high grade silicon and ortofon foams which are similarly shaped. If you have a pic I can confirm if those are the same.

Glad to know things improve further with burn in :)

I checked the email from 3 years ago it says EARBUDS EARTIPS EAR TIPS BUDS FOR ORTOFON E-Q8 E-Q7 E-Q5 EQ 8 5 7 HEADPHONES so it should be the same but with the picture it's hard to tell. They do seem rounder shaped in real life.

I found a picture of those I have

You can find some on ebay, I found this but you can probably find too

Cool thanks. I'll try the black ones.
I have some spiral dots and some symbios on their way. The knockoffs are cheap, who knows, maybe they will fit.

@davidmolliere Seeing as you declined my extremely generous offer to look after these for you indefinitely (

), as a fellow 846 owner, can you share a few words on how the CL2 compares?

That's going to be really hard as it's been several years since the SE846. From memory though, the signature is really different the SE846 are much darker even with the white filter that I ended up using. The CL2 treble alone would have been enough to make them really different but the mids of the CL2 are rather neutral compared to warm for the SE846. The bass are leaner with an emphasis on sub bass and mid bass are on the fun side on the SE846. Take that with a grain of salt, it's been a while but I vividly remember the excitement I got from the IE800 right after the SE846, it's much much more lively so given I think there are commonalities between IE800 and CL2 as described previously this will be a very different experience.

The CL2 has incredible resolution, clarity and transparency (in fact it has more than Phantom and VE8) and is detail oriented without falling into analytical territory (it remains very musical, yeah!).

By the way, I have done some further tip rolling, giving the double flange a try and they are pretty interesting being more mid forward but I am loosing seal with the biggest. Tried the Ortofon foams and that was an interesting smoother take on the signature. I like it.

So I went ahead and gave the bundled complys a try, and it's even smoother without loosing definition, sparkle and detail up top. I'll stick with those for a while, the soundstage has expanded quite a bit especially depth is much better. Tip rolling is really something with the CL2, it can change the signature significantly!

I ordered Symbio wide bores as I only had regular bore ones, I guess this will be interesting!

@davidmolliere Ah, please excuse my reading comprehension skills. I didn't notice the "previous gear" part of where you listed the SE846. I'l show myself out.

Sounds like you haven't forgotten the essence of the 846 sound so that's more than enough for me. Much obliged!

I've always had a soft spot for RHA as a company. The CL1 didn't appeal to me as I steer towards a darker sound on the dark/bright continuum but I'm also not adverse to extended treble presence where it's in balance with the low end, which certainly seems to be the case with the CL2 from the impressions in thus far!

Now, can I justify having another IEM? Who am I kidding, of course I can. Justifying it to the other half... a different matter entirely

Well I lean towards the same end as you, darker, warmer but recent acquisition and meetups had me change my mind a bit and I know enjoy musical but more neutral and extended IEMs, the VE8 was a revelation that I love treble done right. Extension doesn't have to equate to sharpness or even harshness! When I auditioned the Flamenco I was surprised to enjoy its signature (bass switch up and treble switch down) and there are commonalities with the CL2, detailed, energetic and musical.

Now the CL2 is the maximum liveliness of treble I can enjoy but it's done right and I am discovering a treble head in me :p Electric guitars give me shivers with the CL2 :)

Well, disclaimer I only had 30mn with the Flamenco and same with the U18t, but I have owned the VE8 for 6 months and Phantom for 5 months. I don't claim to have golden ears either so this is all very subjective to my ears and preferences. From memory I'd say Flamenco has more kick with bass switch on : I would place the CL2 between the Flamenco with switch bass off and on. I would also say the Flamenco had more textured bass (but CL2 is not totally burned in I think). I didn't even try the treble switch on with the Flamenco as I found there was plenty of energy and detail with the switch off. So maybe you even get more out of the Flamenco with treble switch on. I'll have a chance to make a comparison side by side on the 21st during another meetup, I'll make extra sure to do some critical comparison.

My initial point was rather that the CL2 has a tuning that was reminiscent of the Flamenco (detailed, energetic, extended), not that it performs up there with it although I suspect the differences are not as big as one would think from price range alone. For me it's always more about signatures than pure technicalities so the dual switch on the Flamenco, the extra texture my appeal more and justify the price gap. Some might prefer what I think is the more neutral take on the Flamenco's signature with the CL2. At the same time it's more energetic than the U18t which I liked a lot but didn't get the sense of excitement I get from the Flamenco and CL2.

Last but not least, since I own the VE8 and have quite a lot of hours on them, I can tell that the CL2 is just as good technically as the VE8, I would even dare say given its signature you get even more resolution, transparency and clarity. Does that mean the CL2 is better than VE8? To me it's hard to compare, I have heard nothing like the refinement of the VE8's treble that are smoother than CL2, and I like the VE8 mids better since my taste lends towards body and weight but with Jazz I'll take the CL2 over VE8 so the leaner mids on the CL2 are a strength. Same goes for mid bass, VE8 provides more enjoyment but the CL2 is technically more accurate with leaner bass. Beauty of this hobby, we get to enjoy several approach to sound :)

Either way I think the CL2 have amazing value for money, on top of being quite an innovative product. Oh and I owned the LCD i4 for a few months but although I liked them, the open back was a limitation for my use and I missed the engaging aspect I got from the VE8. So the CL2 is somewhat of what I would have liked the LCD i4 to be :p

@davidmolliere now that you have a bit more time with the CL2, how would you compare it to the Phantom, especially when it comes to subbass/vocals/mids?

Yeah I have basically lived with the CL2 in my ears since I got them :p

The CL2 are tuned differently from the Phantom.

The biggest difference is the Phantom is much thicker, there is much more body and weight to the notes and it's also warmer. I don't mean that the CL2 is thin and cold, just that it's tuned to get you a lot of air and it's more leaning towards neutral. Both are very natural, but the Phantom is natural warm where the CL2 is neutral natural (if that makes sense)

The bass are similar, with nice physical sub bass, I think CL2 extends further but Phantom has more density so overall it has more impact (and Phantom probably has a touch more mid bass).

Mids are tuned with some similarities in the sense that lower mids are clean and upper mids gives them very articulate mids, but again weight and body differ greatly so the Phantom has that almost tactile feeling while the CL2 has better separation and air and a more neutral tone.

Highs is where they differ the most, and it affects the whole CL2 signature as it has more treble extension and sparkle (part of it is also that highs on the Phantom have a warmer tone, I never found them lacking at all contrary to some, just a different take).

The CL2 has sharper attack across the range, and it's also quite faster across the range, the 10mm planar is really amazing in that respect giving a sense of pace, rythm and timing that is really something to behold. I even wonder if it's not faster than the VE8. You get the sense it can tackle whatever you throw at it. I already enjoyed this with the i4 but to a lesser extent since it didn't have the same snap and sparkle that gives you shiver on hi hats and provide some nice bite to instruments (in particular electric guitars are a treat).

Vocals are neither recessed nor forward, pretty balanced in the mix but farther than the Phantom which is more intimate. I enjoy the Phantom mids more for vocals, especially male vocals as the CL2 lower mids dip is more accentuated than the Phantom. For female I'd say it's a closer match although I prefer the intimacy of the Phantom and it's warmer tone. Phantom convey emotion better with more texture, maybe the CL2 will gain a bit more as it further burns in. As far as instruments go, I prefer woods and woodwinds on the Phantom, but guitars (especially again electric guitars), brass are clearly amazing on the CL2 and overall Jazz and Classic shine.

Additional note : I have been mainly running the CL2 with the DX200/AMP8 (reference for most of my comments), but I think I like it better with Mojo. I suspect warmer and bassier source will make the CL2 match my preferences even a bit better. Mojo has more weight and body taking the CL2 furthering my enjoyment. I suspect Fio X7II would be a good match as well. I'll try them with the SP1000 at a meetup but I am not sure I am going to like the treble.

I also believe that's why I find the BT neckband to be a great implementation with smooth sound, extra mid bass and vocal forwardness. YMMV.
