hey guys, i have an hd650, an fiio fh3 and some klipsch speakers powered by a yamaha receiver, i used a focusrite solo as a dac/heaphone amp/preamp, but then i switched to an lg v40 and there is a big difference in sound quality, it got me curious to try better dac/amp options to use with the speakers or headphones.
Is the zen dac, or hip dac an noticeable upgrade to the lg v40? is it recommended to use as a preamp for the yamaha receiver? or are there better options in terms of just pure sound quality around 200? i don´t care much if it is portable or not

I would say it is, especially if you are going to use cans or IEMs able to show this difference. Here I'll also say that hip-dac is essentially a ZEN DAC, but portable and with batteries inside. ZENs are all desktop devices powered via 5V.

Howdy, quick question for the ifi elves...I’m sure this has been asked and discussed ad nauseam but I figured I would get the quickest answer here.

I’m on a 2019 Macbook Pro and have had the HipDac for about a week now and am on 5.3c and having the popping and 1-2 second stall before tracks play on tidal. Sometimes it will clip a second of the front of a song entirely before playing. I know it has been mentioned that it is normal during rate changes etc. I tested my JDS Element II and Encore mDSD dongle and do not get any of these pops at all and the rates change dynamically with no problem.

Just wondering if this is prevalent on all HipDac’s and Zen’s or is there any tips or tricks to defeat this? Thanks ahead of time.

Looking at the iFi specs pages for the Zen DAC and the Hip DAC, the latter appears to be more powerful:

Output Power (@1% THD)
Zen DAC
BAL: 330mW@32 Ohm; 6.6V@600 Ohm
S-BAL (SE): 230mW@32 Ohm; 3.3V@600 Ohm

Hip DAC
BAL: 400mW@32 Ohm; 6.3V@600 Ohm
S-BAL (SE): 280mW@32 Ohm; 3.2V@600 Ohm

Is this correct? If so, might just have to pick up a Hip DAC in the winter sales!

Although there are some minor differences between them, both ZEN DAC and hip-dac were designed as products from the same tier.

Hi folks,

my iFi hip dac should be at my door in the next week. Going to use it mainly with a Mac Book Pro and an iPhone 6. Is there a way to get a read out of the firmware using a mac? I know there is a Windows tool but unfortunately I don't own a pc so any help would be highly appreciated.

Merry Christmas ya'll

I've been thinking about getting a HipDac. Just one problem… I'd be using a Sony A17 for a source.
Does anybody know of anywhere (preferably N.A.) a person can still get one of those cursed WMport cables that'd work with the HipDac? All I can find are OOS discontinued models.

Please see here:

How to check firmware version of iFi products on Mac OSX?

  1. Click on the apple icon on the system bar
  2. Select “About this Mac”
  3. Click the “System Report” button
  4. Find “USB” under “Hardware” and select it
  5. Find “iFi (by AMR) HD USB Audio” and select it
  6. Look at “Version:”

You most likely would need something like that as the only way to get into-hip-dac is via its USB input.

Based on all the reviews and seemin how most of my headphones and IEM’s are terminated in 4.4 this seemed like a no brainer. Hopefully they’ll get here this week to test with my note 20 ultra and my iPad mini 5.

I’m not going to lie the fact that it has the Burr Brown Dac is exciting to me. It first made me fall in love with higher end audio through the Cowon Plenue 1}s implementation. So the fact that it’s balanced in 4.4 and has a Burr Brown isn’t a bad start.

Just got mine in, I’m not gonna lie it sounds better with my ier Z1r’s than my WM1Z does. Which is really baffling for this tiny amp/dac considering it costs about 20 times less.

Now if anyone can point me to a better usb cable than the blue stiff one provided in the box, I’d be more than elated with this purchase.
