iFi Audio Zen Dac 3... Plug In, World Out!

Sounds much more detailed with it - highs are bit crisper. Didn’t notice much difference in the bass though, which isn’t a complaint as it sounds fine. One question though - am I right that there is no way to power it off (except for using the socket) when using the plug? Previously turning off the my Mac turned off the DAC. Now it seems to be on all of the time.
I am asking for you, the ZD3 operates in the same way as the previous versions did, as most were "not using" separate power supplies. If you are referring to the light on the back indicating an "external" power supply that is always illuminated when connected.

Cheers!!

Thanks. It's the front lights that are on. As far as i can tell, there is no way to turn it off except to unplug the power supply.

Ok here's how it works for me with the V2, I have not received the 3 as of yet.

When using USB only the power is drawn from the device it is connected to. As such it powers on and off with the Laptop or desktop.

When adding a Silent power device, you are simply giving the ZD3 better power but it still functions the same, if you power down or disconnect the USB the unit will power down even if the Mains connector is still engaged.

I will add two photos shortly to show this.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!!

Thanks, but that’s not how mine seems to work. the USB is clear - when the laptop is off, the DAC doesn’t receive any power and everything powers down. However, with external power it stays on, regardless of the state of the computer. Not sure if that’s a difference with v3 (something with the USB C port maybe) or because I’m using a Mac. I haven’t tried disconnecting the USB though. I’ll try that later.

That could be, This is what I had handy to check. However in my studio downstairs I have a Mac mini and when that powers down (off) the same occurs.

As you said it may be something with the New model, but I don't think so.

Also operates the same with my Zen Stream connected, even though the Silent power is connected when the Zen is powered down, all lights for both go out. Perhapd the mac is still sending a power or audio signal somehow.

We shall figure it out! :L3000:

Cheers!!

'Morning,

so I disconnected the USB C entirely, but it still stays powered on when connected to the power. It's very strange. at this point, my question is is it something with this model (in which case there are things I can do) or is there a problem with my particular Zen DAC 3.
