iFi audio Pro iDSD (Official) - NEW Firmware - MQA and more.

It wasn't intended as a sterile list of criticisms, indeed. Rather a list of suggestions, from a daily user, to improve the useability of a possible next version of the iDSD (or whatever name you will give to your next foray into the higher end territory).

Edit: You shouldn't regard the customers who complain about what they perceive as shortcomings of your products, or who suggest improvements, as nasty people [Trump style], even less as enemies; they are a free R&D dept. They tell you how they actually use your products, what they expected and expect from them, what are their wet dreams about them, etc... Whether these shortcomings are fixable and these dreams are feasible depends of your paid R&D dept., of course, but IMHO, it would be a big mistake to completely dismiss them.

[re: the RJ45 socket. It seems too "shallow" to firmly hold the Wireworld Platinium ethernet cable that I use. I don't think that the Wireworld is the culprit: it goes neatly in every other RJ45 plug that I have at hand now.]

It's been Roon compatible for a good while, via a WIN based app (iFi Bridge), but it's done. Please see here:

Please add Roon compatability for Apple Mac users!

Imagine situation that you want to use iDSD without any PC/Mac as addvertized!
Use App input on device and USB flash/SDcard/external USB hard disk. What Android app to use other tnan Muzo to control iDSD and have decent interface for controling songs on attached devices mentioned above? This app is really very bad!!!!

Btw, I seem to have a problem with fw 2.08: the iDSD sometimes (when it's idle) loose the connection and I don't find it anymore, with my tablet, despite it's listed among the connected gear by the router. It didn't occur with fw 2.03.

I have to turn it off and on, after several minutes, to find it back.

Today, it took me 30 minutes before I was able to get it work.

We take every feedback into account and at the same time we're open about what complicated products such as Pro iDSD can and can't do.

Come on, of course we don't :smile_phones:

As above, we take into account both good and bad feedback. If we can address any issue, we will.

Please open up a ticket here: http://support.ifi-audio.com/

Please add Roon compatability for Apple Mac users!

At the moment it's not possible to have our iFi Bridge tailored to run on Macs. Sorry.

Why Pro IDSD don't have XLR headphone output instead of 3.5mm?
I have Pro ICan so i don't bother but i know some people who might like this idea.

I appreciate you make the effort to provide a workaround. But i am not sure you can call your product now Roon compatible. I mean you could have said before that it is Roon compatible via Airplay. Plus I do not use a PC nor a MAC to play music. Mine comes from NAS controlled via ipad or iphone. Same with Tidal.
I have settled into either using Roon via Airplay or to use mconnect if i want to explore high res audio or MQA (Tidal). While i can live with that i cannot understand how you come out with such a great product and you burden it with such a poor network player. Muzo is not a serious product. It is very poor software to start with and since i am using it (a little more than a year) there was ONE update (and that was a minor bug fix) - so there is absolutely NO development.

Had a quick play with the ifi-bridge app, from first look it appears to be a wrapper for the Logitech Media Server to uPnP bridge package on github. If you are a squeezebox/slimdevices fan this might be familiar. :)
The version included with ifi-bridge actually contains the mac and linux versions so if you don't mind using a command line and reading the included docs you should be able to play around with it on a Mac.

I don't use Mac/Linux much and never used Roon/mqa so no idea if iFi tweaked anything to improve support or just did a gui wrapper for windows to run the 2 or 3 command lines needed to start this package up, I did have a look at the config files that it uses/builds and there didn't appear to be anything changed in those from the defaults (there are sections to add custom audio formats supported on individual devices for instance, no definition for iFi pro iDSD that I can see).

As I still use LMS as a music server (and my old squeezebox2 :) ) I'm going to have a play with tweaking this as being able control the iDSD and a few other uPnP devices via LMS interfaces seems a lot more user friendly then other uPnP apps I've played with in the past or Muzo. Just need to figure out exactly what file formats and bit/sample rates I can throw at it (the default/unchanged setting limits all devices to 48khz for instance).

PS Had another quick play, the iDSD doesn't advertise sample/bit rates supported (does respond with supported codecs though) via the uPnP protocol but I tried changing the sample rate in the config to 96000 and then 192000, which both worked okay with a couple of flacs I played.
It doesn't list dsf/dss as supported on uPnP but I'll have a play with that too, I've only got one dsf album so not a major issue for me. :)

Self-taught acoustic guitar singer-songwriter David Elias lives in Hawaii. He has played music all his life. He has written songs since earliest teen years.

He became an adventurous musician online in the earliest Internet days and began self-producing a seemingly endless menu of music and styles, settings, backing bands and artists on his own label Sketti Sandwich Productions.

In the early 2000's he helped pioneer some of the first hi-res technologies (DSD) to create the most realistic listening reproductions for listeners in both stereo and surround sound as if you are in the studio with the artists performing.
