iFi audio Pro iDSD (Official) - NEW Firmware - MQA and more.

Hi everyone!

Just picked up the iFi pro iDSD and running into a few issues and wondering if anyone has experienced the same. I tried to read through 114 pages of this thread but haven't seen an answer yet. I am running the latest firmware (2.08). I am using mConnect (latest version) on my Android phone and using wifi to play Tidal MQA tracks to my Yamaha A-S1200 via RCA out.

1) There are 3 seconds of skipping at the start of every MQA track. When I select a song on mConnect, initially, there are a few skips as the pro IDSD sees a DSD file. It takes a few seconds to see the file as an MQA file and then properly decodes it. The rest of the playback of the track is flawless. This happens every time I start a new track but frustratingly, it occurs between tracks when I am playing an entire album. The "gapless" option on mConnect has been turned off. I could live with it if it was just when selecting new tracks but it really disrupts the continuous playback of an album!

Not sure if this adds any information: but when I use my Bluesound Node 2i SPDIF Out into the pro iDSD, this problem does not occur. The pro iDSD seems to see a continuous stream of MQA so doesn't flip back and forth between DSD and MQA. This problem also doesn't occur when playing straight PCM files as the pro iDSD is not switching back and forth.

2) Background hum/hiss. When I crank my Yamaha to 12 o'clock, there is a background hum or hiss. It is worse when the wifi antenna is inserted (where there is a repetitive clicking noise). When I remove the antenna, the hum is still there but no more clicking. I've checked my interconnects, the power supply, the plug, the other amp inputs and all seem to be fine with my other sources. It doesn't seem to matter if the ifi pro iDSD is set to "app" or "spdif" or "usb". It occurs when the DSD upsampling is on or off. It also occurs in solid state, tube or tube+ modes. Is this a known issue? I've read a bit on the thread about wifi shielding issues?

Thanks everyone!

Russ

Russ it's a little off topic but do you or have you noticed any difference in SQ in your music between the node2i and the pro idsd when playing back MQA or high res files through your amp?

Just did a brief head to head of the Node 2i RCA out versus Node 2i SPDIF Out into the iFi pro iDSD, playing MQA 96khz files. The iFi is set to Tube mode. I really enjoyed the built in DAC of the Node 2i for several months but I was really blown away with the iFi. Soundstage is huge and I find the vocals warmer. Node 2i is amazing for the price but when going back and forth, I found the Node 2i more neutral and less exciting to listen to. iFi definitely more musical.

Just did, thanks!!! Hoping I find a fix for this streaming issue because this DAC is pretty awesome otherwise!

Thanks that's good to know, I have the pro I can and node2i as my DAC currently in the bedroom and it is pretty good as well Tube + followed by Tube are my favorites I also love the Xbass implementation and effect.
Guess I will have to start saving for the pro IDSD next.
I'm sure the ifi team will get you sorted out.

Thanks a lot and it's highly appreciated that you were able to map our Pro iDSD as musical. That specific feature was our goal indeed! :beerchug:

Short question please: With the iDSD connected to the Pro iCan, should the iDSD stay in High gain mode?

The best way to do this is to select the "HiFi (fixed)" setting on the back. Line out will be fixed to do what you want!

Thanks for the reply. - I constantly shift between using the iDSD with my IEM and the iDSD & iCan with my overhead cans. I'd therefore prefer to not changing the hard-to-reach setting in the back (at least where my gear is located). What would be the second best option?

I'd have to double-check, but IIRC you should be able to control volume of Pro iDSD's headphone outs even if its line outs are fixed.

Could somebody be so kind and chime in on the wifi setup of the idsd? It is a complete mystery to me that the manual explains so many unnecessary or specific things but does not cover the wifi setup. Seriously?

Anyway, so far I did the following (I do not have wps):
1. Changed input setting on the idsd to wifi, the network ifi_Hi-Res_Audio_E2C4 becomes available
2. Changed PC wifi input to ifi-network, opened browser and navigated to 10.10.10.254
3. Setup page comes up. I log on PC to normal network (not 5g) and select on the browser page exactly that network. Password is asked ...
well, and here I type my password correctly in, and the ifi is connecting and connecting showing a grey spinning wheel.

Anybody else experienced this? Thanks

I agree, a step-by-step instruction for wifi set up would really help! What I did using my Android device (Pixel 4a) was:
1) Download Muzo App on Google Play. Do not open it yet.
2) Turn on iFi Pro and then set source to "App"
3) Open your wifi networks on your Android device and select the iFi_Hi-Res_Audio network
4) On my android, I need to click through a little pop up that says "No internet connection detected, do you wish to stay connected?" Click yes. Then you will see an icon on your android that says you are wifi connected but have no internet connection
5) Now you can turn on the Muzo App. It will then see "1 device available" and then you can click Add Device, and then select the network etc. As an FYI, the iFi pro iDSD only works on 2.4ghz networks.
6) The key thing I was screwing up was turning on the Muzo App first before connecting to the ifi_Hi-Res_Audio network. It has to be done in the order above (at least for me).

Hope that works!

FWIW : I am using the 5ghz, and it seem to work ok....
