I think I may have found the "limits" of the IFI Diablo... I recently got a set of Monolith AMT headphones, which feature a 32Ω driver whose sensitivity is rated at 90 dB/mW at 1 kHz; these can take outputs as strong as 10W per channel (200 ms peak), so I thought: now I can really test the balanced Turbo mode of the Diablo. So, with the AMT headphones placed on a desk, I engaged the Turbo setting on the amp and started turning up the volume...everything was fine (and LOUD) until 1 PM, but as the volume knob reached around 2PM position, silence settled in abruptly and I had to go back to 11-12, or to switch to Normal mode, to resume normal operation. Is this a sort of "protection" thing?

That is exactly what that behaviour is, a current protection mode.

I like my Diablo but it is not at its best with low impedance and low sensitivity headphones. Dan Clark Aeon Noire at 13 ohms and around 92db/mw will trip the current limit protection as you describe.

Plug the Diablo into a good power supply and it will override the battery and the current protection. I have used a 25 watt Samsung charger which works great and is quiet. The supplied ifi power supply is next to useless except for charging only.

Into 300 ohm HD600 no such problem since voltage supply is plentiful and little current is needed.

So the current load is indeed increased yet with Gen 1 and Gen X Diablo once plugged into AC power and not only for charging?
Thx

On original Diablo at least, no idea about X.

That was my observation and after some asking for technical clarification here Thor who designed the Diablo and ifi both confirmed that connecting the Diablo to a power supply does indeed override the battery.

Of course it needs to be a power supply that surpasses the capabilities of the battery, the one supplied is a step backwards,

I like it, won't be buying it cause of no analog input but at least it is bold instead of being another flat surfaced rectangle.
The 4.4 output on the rear also functions as a line in!

A few adapters to sit your particular needs and you are golden.

Cheers!!

So how would I connect a single ended 3.5mm to the 4.4mm?
Search around Amazon, Ali for the type of adapter that will work for your circumstances and needs

You would be surprised at the amount of adapters and cables that exist

On a quick search, I found this one On Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/Balanced-Female-Headphone-Earphone-Adapter/dp/B0828K966Q/ref=pd_ci_mcx_mh_mcx_views_0?pd_rd_w=hR5rl&content-id=amzn1.sym.225b4624-972d-4629-9040-f1bf9923dd95:amzn1.symc.40e6a10e-cbc4-4fa5-81e3-4435ff64d03b&pf_rd_p=225b4624-972d-4629-9040-f1bf9923dd95&pf_rd_r=BBYG9BFKXFF9Z2P1AB2E&pd_rd_wg=bFS2a&pd_rd_r=441f4183-8706-4c2c-91b3-33dd1ec12c57&pd_rd_i=B0828K966Q
You will need to find what works for you but it can be done!

Happy Hunting!

Cheers!!

It looks good but still not the desktop dac I expected iFi would make. Neo DSD 2 is not the answer either just because you implemented the Diablo V1 amp or something in that regard.

Kudos anyway for making unique and great entry-level products, even though I see the potential Diablo V1 much higher up.
