iFi audio iDSD Diablo - A portable reference done our way!

Folks, two small updates about micro iDSD Diablo.

1. The product's 4.4 balanced line output that can work as a line input (100kΩ input impedance) is an easter egg, but we wanted users to find that one on their own :D

This essentially means that micro iDSD Diablo can operate as a standalone headphone amp with its digital bits bypassed, but only when there's no digital signal going in. Regular 4.4mm cables will work!

2. micro iDSD Diablo turning off with demanding headphones rated below 16Ω.

Without going too deep into specifics, the product's battery is the limiting factor and external PSUs bypass the issue, but at the expense of a lot of heat.

That's why micro iDSD Diablo's 4.4mm headphone out is best for high impedance loads and its single-ended heaphone out is the one to use with low impedance loads. To put this into perspective:

micro iDSD Diablo's 4.4mm headphone out delivers 1W into 16Ω in Turbo mode.
micro iDSD Diablo's 6.3mm headphone out delivers 2.54W into 16Ω in Turbo mode.
micro iDSD Diablo's 4.4mm headphone out delivers 4.9W into 64Ω in Turbo mode.

Hope this helps, thanks!

Huh?? My Diana's don't draw nearly as much SE vs balanced.

Also I think Thorston left us iFi fans a little secret thank you for including that "Easter egg" that was denied possible by iFi before.

Thanks Thorsten!

When iFi will have this kind of cable with FEMALE XLR's instead of Male ones?
https://ifi-audio.com/products/4-4mm-to-xlr-cable/
Someone here would recommend one high end cable for this use?

Thanks for the open and detailed response iFi Audio.

That is pretty much what Thorsten advised on a private message when he saw I was having issues.

He went into the why of the battery being the limiting factor but that is not important here.

The Line In "Easter Egg" is very cool and I've ordered an iFi 4.4mm to 4.4mm cable to make use of it just extending the Diablo a bit more over the fabulous unit it already is.

Is a 5 wire earthed cable necessary ? I had issues with needing to connect the Pentaconn earthing sleeves ?

On the 4 wire interconnect that I have, if I didn't do a make shift join of the earths with another wire it would hum and the bass was very obviously lacking, but the same one works fine between my M11 Plus and Grypon. With an earthing wire mimicking what I believe the iFi cable has, the hum was gone and the sound was excellent as one would expect.

Thanks again
Bryce

" Without going too deep into specifics, the product's battery is the limiting factor and external PSUs bypass the issue, but at the expense of a lot of heat."

What output into 16 Ohms is available on an optimal PSU ? Running on a 25 Watt fast charger the Diablo was faultless even on Turbo into 13 Ohm Aeon and the unit and the power supply where cool to the touch despite running pretty hard for about an hour.
