If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

Ah... I think my ears are spoiled by ER4S, I just bought a HE400i, while the sound is more full-bodied (the advantage of over-ear I guess), it is nowhere near ER4s clarity.

Fellow ER4 owners, do you have over-ear recommendations, that don't make you wanna throw them away after 10 minutes...

Stax SR-009 or HE1000.

Try HE-6, LCD-X, Beyerdynamic T1, Qualia 010 or SR-009.

I'm actually quite surprised you think the HE-400i lacks in clarity, and to an IEM at that. When I had the 400i, I thought they where very detailed. Not Beyer T1 level, but still. Maybe are you talking about the upper treble extension in terms of clarity? Because I noticed the 400i had less treble extension than the HD 650. I worry if the Er4 series will actually give me too much detail actually.

Only plugged into Mojo, instrument separation on HE-400i is a far cry from that on Er4s, which creates a "foggy" ambience, side by side, it is a mess... that is what I meant by "lacks in clarity". Maybe I was using the wrong terminology?

Ah, ok got it. I do agree with you on that, the imaging is not terribly good on the 400i. How bright would you say the ER4 is compared to the HE-400i, in terms of treble brightness, sibilance, etc? Or just in general compared to neutral headphones.

To my very inexperienced ears, treble on 400i is lusterless, repressed, unmusical; while on ER4 is a little bit larger than life, but compared to real concert, I would say Er4 is more bona fide. I don't really understand what counts as neutral headphones.

Not to change the subject, but today I was thinking about some comments I read in this thread a while back about people's ER4s dying as a result of being played at too high of volume. Which got me wondering, in a balanced armature driver, what would physically cause driver failure? The reed? The diaphragm? Would it be an immediate failure, or degradation over time?

Just curious if this is something to be aware of.

Lol

So there is nothing not beaten & chewed up by ER4S in the sub-500 USD price range?

Shure sr940 is about the closest. Hd600 is good but i prefer the sr over both for pure frequency response. I'd take the 940 as my top affordable headphone.

I love the SRH940 but they have such a mediocre build quality. I've had 2 replacement pairs (plastic arms would crack) and eventually gave up. Too bad, they do sound great for the price.

Just a quick update.
My old pair er4s is getting really worn out.
SO i bought another er4pt box just in case for a very good price.
While er4pt was shipping er4s developed a fault but i managed to fix it.
and boom
i am a happy owner of er4s and er4pt that i didnt even open.
So i guess if my er4s really dies i ll have a replacement.
10-20 years planning sometimes works:)
