If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

That's interesting - so the different coloured filters lead to different effects sound wise?

I got some free reds from Knowles, but they're metal rather than plastic. Now I can't get them out without a special tool. Good thing I like the increased bass response (actually reduced mids/highs).

This might be a general amp related question but it is about the ER4S' specifically so...

If I am using the S adapter or get the S Shure adapter for my ER4P-T's, would the added impedance be a higher drain on my phone's battery?

I'm a big fan of the adapter and love the sound of the 100ohm of the S over the 27ohm of the P. It has clearer highs and it's not as muddy in the mid bass. Plus I feel better with a less likely chance to deafen myself since the volume is more limited.

My main concern is whether or not it'll drain my battery more than if I just us the P with less resistance.

Thanks!!

ER4S will suck out battery much faster, than ER4P

Crud.. So the P's are my option then. I could do an experiment and see how fast it kills it. Might not be a big number. As far as volume goes it takes maybe 33% to reach comfortable volume with the P and about 66% to reach comfortable volume with the S.

Would that volume difference matter or is it the drain due to higher impedance?

EDIT: Sorry if these are n00b questions. I've never done any testing or much reading on it myself. And yes, if I had the time I would spend it reading up on it but right now I just don't have the time and I want to go ahead and get one ordered.

As always, thanks for the input!

Just a little quibble, but as the ER4s and p's use the same driver, they both have the same efficiency. They both drain batteries at the same rate and take the same amount of power to drive.

However, the S model has a higher impedance meaning portable sources that run with limited output voltages (or small caps that lose a lot of voltage quickly) tend to fall apart (and lack dynamics, particularly in the bass region).

But personally I prefer the ER4s in either case.

More quotes further down:
  1. "The ER4P and the ER4S do not have the same efficiency. The ER4P more efficient at 106dB/mW while the ER4S/B have 100dB/mW"
  2. "I suspect there's a point along the graph where the ER4p's would take exactly the same amount of power to produce the same SPL as the ER4s (at 1/3 the voltage).."

Looks as though they produce the same volume at the same drain level. I'm not an engineer so most of this theory is coming out of my ass until I'm proven otherwise. :p

Are these confirmed working with the ER4? It doesn't mention ER4 on that page.

I don't know what "confirmed" means but it's compatible with ER4. I don't know about technical details but gray, orange, red, white and of course green... they're all of a size and you can use with ER4. But which one will you like? Who knows!

he meant the size, not the damping value. ety sells different "red" filters of different diameters.

Exceptionally interesting that. Thank you. :)

Is there another iem you've heard that the ER4S w/ red filters sounds like? Or maybe if you can say if the ER4S w/ red filter bridges the gap between a ER4S and a __________ (fill in the blank: SE425, SE535, GR10, VC1000, etc.)?

Earlier discussion about how the reds change the sound. YMMV.

To me, they still sound like 4Ps, just with more bass. I did notice a slight change in mids/highs, but it's inconsequential to me.

Hi guys,

Just got the er4pt, is there a better cable you can get for these? The microphonics are the worst i've experienced with earphones - even using multiple shirt clips ha! Rather a shorter cable too.

Also any recommendations on tips? Using the large tri flange ones at the moment which are better than i expeceted - found the foam ones a bit too big so thinking of a medium set of comply tips.

Cheers :)

I tried the Complys that came with my Tios and didn't like them. Couldn't get them deep enough, nor a good enough seal. The tri-flanges work best for me, though some I think have recommended the Shure olives(?). http://www.head-fi.org/t/636153/best-place-to-get-shure-olive-tips
