If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

Hello guys :) I have a weird experience with the seal. I have er3se and when it seals perfectly and isolates everything, bass reduces with the volume overall and treble loses it's definition and becomes harsh. When I insert it slightly lose , bass becomes boomy but treble gets it's good shape. Any recommendations ?

Sounds like your eartips had been pushed beyond the first bend of your canal, compressing the accoustic pathway. You can simulate what had happened by simply bending your eartips with your fingers and observe what happens to the central opening.

Etys gotta insert deep but never beyond the bend, or else the eartip will change shape and mess up the sound.

for wet type of earwax like me, you should suffer from wet eartips for long listening sessions, I though this was my first problem with etymotic's filters but what baffled me is why newly inserted filters got clogged much quicker than older ones....

I’m considering purchasing the ER4X. Do they insert as deeply as the ER series? Are they comfortable? How do they sound compared to the ER4XR? How about quality control issues/durability?

Hello everyone,

any recommendations/solutions for a 4.4mm BAL cable, ≤100 USD/EUR, with available shipping to Europe?

- the official Etymotic balanced cable with an additional 2.5mm to 4.4mm adapter?
- the official Etymotic balanced cable and soldering a 4.4mm plug?
- a standard MMCX cable with an additional adapter to Etymotic-MMCX?
- a standard MMCX cable and grinding down the notch on the driver housings?
- any cable and soldering compatible MMCX connectors?
- a cable from lunashop and hoping that the sold one exactly matches the pictures in the shop?

Any better/easier solutions?
Are there any other shops/brands with Etymotic compatible MMCX cables?

Ok, update regarding my „journey” to find a nice, balanced 4.4 mm cable for my ER4SR in Europe:

1) I bought adapters like these:

wt-er4sr-mmcx-1.jpg

They let me use standard MMCX cables, and when changing cables they remove the strain/wear from the IEM-socket.

They are not that easy to find, so I'll provide some links in case anyone else is interested in them (some are not OKCSC branded, but seem to be identical):

2) I bought the ddHiFi BC120A (Clouds) Air Series cable (two of them, actually):

The full aluminium alloy (no plastic at all) MMCX connectors, splitter, slider and 3.5 mm plug are so incredibly sleek, slim and beautiful.

3) I ordered an original Pentaconn 4.4 mm OFC plug:

Wish me luck for soldering it. 🫣 🙈

They are meant to insert the same distance, but it is easier to go deeper than you should because no part of the ER4XR's bullet design can stop it from going "too far." I consider the ERX safer by design.

The sound is very close. Closer to the ER4XR than to the EVO, if memory serves.

That makes sense as the ERX uses the same (but slightly retuned) driver as the ER4XR, and the EVO, I believe, uses three drivers.

Here we go again. A filter I changed just three weeks ago is already getting bad.

I've just now installed a filter in front of the filter,* using high-quality stocking, but I don't know how well it'll work.

* It sounds like a bad joke. :triportsad:

Will it have something to do with the end of the Ety nozzle being flush with the end of the eartip? With the 3 flange the end of the Ety nozzle is recessed deep in to the eartip which could prevent wax reaching the nozzle as easily.

I already answered this question, less than a week ago. No, I also had this problem when I used different tips and the nozzle was recessed.

Don't know about "high-quality stocking", but the material needs to be hygroscopic for this test to work.

Ah, yes. Makes sense. I'm pretty sure humidity itself isn't the culprit, because my HF5 went through much worse, years ago; so either the filters have changed since then, or my earwax did. Both are possible. And in either case, your remark applies, of course.

Here we go again. A filter I changed just three weeks ago is already getting bad.

Filter officially dead. So at this rate of attrition, I'd have to spend 20.55/4*2*52/3 = US$178 per year to keep using my ER4SR.

1.) Amazon shipping. I don't think that Amazon US can be setup for Amazon Global as they are not really supposed to be shipping outside of the US market. We have various distributors across the world and they get a bit frustrated when things are shipped from other markets into theirs.

And I'm frustrated that I'd have to pay US$20.55 instead of US$12.08 just so that retailers can sell products already sold as a huge markup at an even higher markup. But the point is moot, because at either price I cannot afford to change the filters every three weeks.

Having nothing to lose, I sprayed one of my gone-bad filters with alcohol, let it dry overnight, and used it to replace my latest failed filter. The alcohol-processed failed filter is back nearly to normal (the sound is still a tad louder coming through the other filter; I used a mono recording and switched the ear pieces from ear to ear to make sure).

Let's hope it's not a fluke. I dipped my other failed filters in alcohol overnight, and will let them dry for some days at least.
