... i was wondering about that as well, it might be on the bottom of the unit like on the micro iCan. If the headphone section has the same power and voltage rating as the iCan it would really need one in my opinion. As i mentioned in a post earlier my HD650 runs at sufficient volume on the iCan with 0db gain.  I do tend to listen at lower levels so others might use the 10db or even 20db gain on the iCan but of course the iCan was also revised to have a gain switch by user feedback.

but for IEM or easier to drive headphone, it may be an issue. I believe we all want a single amp/DAC that get the job done well instead of switching around everytime :)

exactly, thats what i meant, there should be a gain switch for example when using IEMs. My example with the Sennheiser HD650 is there to show that without a gain switch and a preset default gain it might be to loud for sensitive headphones.

 hehe misread it sorry xD

and I also have experience with getting static shocked by my E09K for touching the gain switch, hope the iFi iDSD doesn't have the problem

so I assume there is no gain switch for micro iDSD? @.@

am I the only one who kept on staring at the PCB? hehe

The iDSD micro will not have a Gain switch in the classic sense of the word. We are working on smarter ways to match the Headphone Amplifier to different headphones. If it comes off, you'll like it.

Can I try to have a guess?  Is it using the volume knob as an alternative?

I assume it would be something like the auto-adjusting gain that is used in Graham Slee headphone amps, the higher the headphone impedance of the headphone the higher the gain that is provided by the amp, just a wild guess of course....

Latest Update: 29th April
We have developed some exclusive attenuators for iFi customers who use very high-sensitivity IEMs with the nano iCAN, nano iDSD and micro iCAN. There are two versions: -12dB and -24dB.

We are running a competition for the next 10 days (close: Saturday 10th May GMT: 21.00).

Should you accept this mission, your objective is simple.

i. Think of a name/names instead of "attenuator"

ii. Post your suggestion/s in this thread

iii. The top 3 most-liked names - chosen by the iFi senior team of Thorsten et al will win:

#1 micro iCAN (rrp Euro259) (Ranked Number 1 headphone amp on Head-Fi!)
#2 nano iCAN (rrp Euro169)
#3 nano iCAN (rrp Euro169)

Best of luck to all of you!

Any questions, just ask away.

  1) Pure Desktop accounts only for 22% in the poll and likely of these some also use Headphones and would like an amp. Also, Japan is a core market for us and there, portable-use is compulsory. Looking ahead, the Smart Device + DAC = high-end audio is a track that we are firmly convinced of.

2) From the poll, some 78% of poll respondents expressed some amount of portable use, so we have no plans to limit ourselves to a "desktop only" version. We have the micro iDAC for that (and even that can be used on the road as it is USB-powered).

Hi, with all due respect these are polls you got off of a forum that is primarily headphone oriented so of course they will be skewed towards headphone/portability use.  But the fact that at least 22% of the people who voted 100% desktop on a headphone forum should speak quite a bit to you (not to mention there are a few posts from people on here asking that you leave out the head phone amp and other doo-dads should say something as well).  Say you posted this on Steve Hoffman's forums which is more 2.1 channel stereo and home theater based I'm thinking you may get different results.

I'm not saying that you should change the specs for this particular device as that would be ridiculous at this point, however what I'm trying to say is that there is a market for a statement DAC sans headphone jacks and other doo-dads that can fit in somebody's audio rack and their entire digital system could be centralized around it such as PS Audio's PWD or DirectStream, Rega's DAC, etc. However iFi kicks butt in price catagories and your strong point is performance/price that the others IMO don't match.  That's all I'm saying ...

I would love to see such a statement pure DAC from iFi with killer price/performance which would fit between my iTube and iUSBPower. Just saying too...
