Hi all - I'm considering one of these, but can't find the answers to a couple of questions I've got.

1. Can you load a fully functional Roon app on this? I've got Roon running at home, and am after something that I can use with this. I was considering A&K but after seeing how they finally implemented Roon (i.e. their DAPs show as an endpoint only, so you'd still have to use another device such as an iPad to select music and control playback!), I want a DAP that can works as a Roon player on a standalone basis.

2. What is the best way to use this as a transport only? I've got a Focal Arche DAC/amp next to my bed, and would like to use the DX300 to feed it Roon or Spotify.

Thanks!
It works but you'll be stuck with the android audio stack, nothing higher

Thanks for taking the trouble @Tex Irie, really appreciate it.

I am to some extent enjoying the DAP I have (PD2). It is not too bad especially considering the price and is highly portable, but I'm looking for an upgrade to something that provides more detail/clarity in retrieval and a bigger soundstage (as well as a bit more power) to properly exploit what my iems can do. Can't go for megabuck portables like SP1000/SP2000 or L&P P6, tho, so KC or DX300 seemed like good options for the price level I can afford.

I hear what you're saying about the two DAPs being comparable SQ-wise, but having a different sound flavour in your ears. Not being a fan of ice-cream myself (warped, I ken, but so these things go ), I had to google your references, but I think I get the point. Do you ever listen to fairly engineered (rather than natural) music like electronica, darkwave, dark core or post-hardcore? I'd be very interested in finding out how that sounds on the DX300. I can imagine chamber music like suites, sonatas, etc., or small-band +vocals jazz must sound very nice.
@gentzen, I listen to a lot of music from various genres... The closest thing I can think of the the genres you referenced would be video game soundtracks, and Synth heavy 80s music.. I haven't heard one genre of music that didn't benefit from the DX300's presentation. I don't think you can go wrong with this DAP. Definitely not trying to sell you on it. But it definitely resolved that upgradeitis for me. Feel free to ask any questions. I will gladly answer. The DX300 ranks as one of my favorite DAPs ever.. The others would be the Questyle QPM and the A&K SP1000M for pure sound quality.

Again, thanks a bunch @Tex Irie for being so helpful and prompt! I do tend to listen to synth-heavy 80s tracks (e.g. Depeche Mode, A Flock of Seagulls, Visage, etc.), after all this genre of music was around and hard to ignore back in my teens, so I like the fact that DX300 makes them sound good.

Oh, brother, Questyle QPM! I've read about this and what I read sounded up my street. Please do tell, how does the DX300 compare to QPM SQ-wise in your ears?

@gentzen, you're welcome! I don't have the QPM in my possession anymore but it's why I like the DX300... similar enough for me to not miss the QPM. it's engaging and incredibly fun to listen to. There are no missing details, good warmth and resolution. If you were to combine the attributes of both DAPs.. I would stop buying portable gear.. If you can only pick one and you don't care about UX/UI or streaming and don't ever see yourself paying for Tidal/Qobuz etc... QPM is a beast.. If you want very similar sound quality and might change your listening habits in the foreseeable future.. DX300 is the Champ. Mind you.. The QPM can be used as a DAC for a mobile phone.. But stacking isn't for everyone.

You want EQ ? Nothing better than analog graphic EQ, because Digital EQ will always suck....it is true that between digital-digital, some have better implementations, but digital can’t compare to analog EQ

I received the EQ a few days ago. It is not passive. It is stated to have a max of 280 mW output power and has 0 dB gain. I didn't check long but I think it affects the sound - I felt that the depth is a bit lost, but I will check it especially with HA200 and then A18t.

Love those Solitaire-P Headphones.. Trippy experience listening to them in a silent room.

Also great pairing with DX300. Unlike other planars like Susvara and 1266, they can be driven pretty well from portables like DX300 and R8. But I like the DX300 pairing more.

Any owners who have also owned the Sony zx507? Care to share your thoughts? I find the zx507 very musical and analog sounding with the DSEE and vinyl processor ON, how would the DX300 sound in comparison? Many thanks for any feedback.

Here’s my “sound is objective” disclaimer, but I own both and feel that for my listening tastes (melodic but hard hitting metal), the zx507 sounds a bit smoother and more musical than the dx300. However, with a battery life that trounces the zx507 and future amp modules that can bring something new to the table, I’d recommend the dx300 over the zx507 in a heartbeat.

To put some more context into it, I think I could pick out the zx507 (DSEE and vinyl on) vs. the dx300 in a blind test, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Hey thanks, very interesting feedback. I am waiting for the « probable » tube module before deciding on the DX300 and your feedback is quite in line with what I was expecting.
