The power output isn't everything but since I mostly use full-size high impedance cans right now (plus I'm sort of sold on the rest) it certainly is important

Your correct. For high impedance cans, higher voltage is the key. The ibasso with independent batteries give a higher voltage capable output than any other brand dap.
Thats why tube amps sound so well with hd800, which, by the way, the ibasso is the only dap that can actually make the hd800 scale to desktop level sound, without any help.

Thanks for the notes on power btw - I guess in the end I'll have to risk it and wait to see what impressions are given for its tuning since the power might not be an issue - a few on here have ZMFs as well so can see how they find the pairing. I think selling my Pendant and DX300 before impressions could lead to some serious regret if they don't synergize how I'd prefer.

Sucks its so limited (I understand why, hopefully just temporary!).

I am on board not really due to power concerns but more so for my IEMs. My most difficult cans to drive is my Amiron Homes and DT1990 pros both being 250 ohms. Even my lowly Shanling M3s drives both with power to spare. .My number one priority for me is SQ and SQ alone. I know the 300Max here will probably drive anything but reason why I was enamored enough to get one is based on Ibasso SQ. I own and test 100s of earphones and was considering so many paths to upgrade my sound chain but in the end I am lazy. I want a single unit that will able to drive everything I got and sound amazing doing it. It has to have a complete black background for my IEMS, portable enough so I can carry it to work and back at times. My hope is that IBasso tuned this one not to be sterile sounding but extremely musical and fluid sounding, I have no doubts it will be at a peak for dynamics and layering with excellent stage. It is a bit of a blind buy for all of us but I still own the old DX90. Even by todays standards in single ended that player sounds amazing for when it came out. I also own the DX160 which SQ alone is again very bang for buck. SO I have high expectations on the Max here. But my point is you don't put in your best engineers to come up with a very limited edition Max unit to be a fail.. No way, no how.
