I have the Japanese one and the sound is great. This is my first Audiophile player so I have nothing to compare it to, but the background is completely black and the DAC is really good. Soundstage is very wide as well. There is a bit of hiss when you get to higher volumes though. I'm getting around 12 hours on a single charge playing 16 bit with the screen off most of the time.

I've had to erase my nand memory manually, firmware reset didn't do the job!...Now got to get all my music back on!

I had just noticed id foolishly put the update file onto my sdcard partition not the main units memory, this might be the cause of my problems, even though the unit is showing the new update as installed.

There's a separate thread for the HDP-R10: http://www.head-fi.org/t/607423/i-basso-hdp-r-10-is-ibasso-dx-100-japan-version-impression-and-appreciation-thread/135

As a first impression - yes, it's like 1.3.7. Atack, punching and contrast are at place. Can't even begin to understand how can 1.1.7 be better than this. I have a question to 1.2.7 users. How do you like the bass in 1.4.2? Is there more/less bass? Is it better/worse?

I could be wrong but does the 1.4.2 sound warmer and more RSA-ish than previous versions!?

Edit: And it still doesn't make me coffee!!! ARGH!!

Oh my bad. I meant at least in a brief listen, it seems to have a little bit of the Ray Samuels amp kind of sound signature - warm.

But I need to play with it more myself just to be sure. I get good and bad audio days.

Did you rebuy à DX100? I thought you just kept àrwak ?

Never sold it. Wanted to but just couldn't be bothered. And it still works well. I've got a Tera Player too and will add my thoughts comparing the two later. However let's just say preliminary findings is that the TP isn't an outright win as previous sentiments conveyed here. They both hold their ground well.

I'll try 1.4.2 when I get home from work today. Like many I've found that 1.3.5 and 1.3.7 were backward steps sonically, so I'm on 1.2.7. In the mean time, I'll be very interested in any further opinions on the new firmware's
sound (oh, and also if anyone can figure out what fixes or enhancements it's supposed to contain!).

I got some severe stuttering on 1.4.2 a few minutes ago and now it just skipped a beat when going from one track to the next...

How long does the new firmware take to install?  I started the process, some info regarding the update was displayed and shortly after the screen went dark and it gave the haptic buzz like when it shuts down.  It's plugged into the charger but the screen is dark.  How can I know that the update is done?

It turns off when it's done, so just turn it on again. It'll take some time to get ready the first time you turn it on after an update.
