I have my new $31 CD780s - compare notes in this thread if you like

Mine arrived today. Only had them on a few minutes, but the next thread where someone asks for comfortable phones, these are it. Even though everyone else has said it, let me repeat because I didn't fully get it... these are like having pillows on. In fact I have $150 feather pillows and they're nothing compared to these. Initial impressions are these are very dynamic/up front. Strong bass. A bit bright, but we'll see how burn in plays out. Already well worth the money and for those that got these instead of the V6's deal, you're lucky. Two cords came in the package. Did I mention they were comfortable?

HI: Compared to my 590s the 780s are more comfortable but a little loser fitting than the 590s. The 590s sound is more refined and has a lot more bass but the 780s are more say upfront and clearer but the 590s are more fun to listen to because of the much better bass I think. Now my 590s cost me 200.00 + 100.00 for the equinox cable and that makes the 590s cost about 10 times more than the 780s. LOL. And no they don't sound ten times better than the 780s. I would give the 780s a 10 for comfort and the 590s a nine. Also the 780s are not as big(wide) as the ATs or the 890s or the CD3000. Those cans always hit the back of my lounge chair when on but the 590s are even less wide and seem to feel better on than all the other cans. I really like the 590s and the 780s are a different sound but if I had to choose one or the other I would choose the 590s. The 780s may sound better with a good burn in and I hope bring out more bass. The 780s are diffidently keepers though. I need a set of cans fore my main rig and another set fore my office and the 590s and 780s are going to be those cans fore the job. I need to listen to the 780s after burn in fore a week and then listen to my 590s again fore a week to really decide on what one I really like better over the other fore long listening sessions. I am very glad I bought the 780s and am very very glad I re bought the 590s.

I only recieved the one rubber-coated cable, but it seems very sturdy with no microphoning (open phones rarely have that problem for me anyway)

The low end needs a bit of loosening up, and I'm sure some burn in will get that done.

They are heavier than the 590's, but about equal comfort-wise. The cloth on ym ears makes them a tad bit warmer than the 590's, but nothing like the closed v-series cans.

So far, quality-wise I wouldn't have felt bad paying the $140 or so these are selling for, and at $35 shipped they were a steal.

Except for the lower case, it's almost like Merton was back for a second. BWAHAHAHAHA ...

Do you think the 780s will benefit much from a burn-in? And what type of amplification are you using that generate the best results? And does anyone have any idea for a case for these monsters? Oh yeah, they sound awesome, crisper and clearer and more open than my eggos, and bring out nuances better than my v6s. I'm hearing things i never heard before. Listening to them is a very refreshing experience.

How's the build quality with the 780s? From the pictures I saw, I can't tell whether they look "faux solid" or if they really are solid and well built.

Just got mine today. Out of the box and trying them on I must say these things are sooo freaking comfortable. It's a fleece-like material, something you'd expect on earmuffs. Problem is that it doesnt really breath well and it gets uncomfortably hot after long listening runs. Nice thing winter is coming up, hehe. Physically they look kinda something you'd pull out of the movie metropolis or something. The adjustable headband fits very well, but looks cheaply made with hard, durable materials and with folding/ripples on the bottom of the band where your head touches....crappy quality checking maybe? It's extremely light, made of mostly plastic and a metal grill.

Listening to them after my friend played with them out of the box for and hour, they sound very much like my cd3k's, but of course doesn't manage to bring out the resolution and detail as much. It also doesn't have the crazy large soundstage (or headstage, whatever you prefer to call it) as the 3k's. Reminds me of a Grado soundstage, with the vocals pushed back veryyy slightly. Bass is smooth and not boomy, but it not as detailed or prominent like the 3ks, tho im suspecting that burn in would help in this department alot. The sound's generally on the bright side, but not as harsh as the v6 as many have mentioned (to my ears at least). Separation of instruments and dynamics are handled well...but again, not as well as the cd3k's can. Comparing classical on the cd3k's and 780s, the 3k's sound clearly in a different league. Nevertheless, they're just as fun as the cd3k's at a fraction of the price, so why should I be complaining (or even comparing the two in the first place)? I like how the cable is detachable and that it uses a 1/8" mini plug on both ends of the cable, leaving room for potential cable upgrades that might help it out on the flaws....but upgrading a cable for this, you'd be spending more on the cable than the headphone more than likely, even if you DIY. The 780s are also MUUUUCH more forgiving on revealing your sources, whereas the cd3k's will blatantly tell you "hey buddy, your source blows..so i'm gonna play lotsa noise to piss you off." The 780s are also slighhtly harder to drive than the cd3k's on my EAR+.

Overall this headphone purchase was a steal for what you get....and no, I didn't get an extra cable...pooop.

You're right, I should be spending my money on new cd's and amplification. I need to start thinking about putting together a Meta42 or a mint. They should go well with my HD580's...
