I've stopped using my X - I have no need for a screen on a DAP any bigger than the 1" OLED of the U5/Clip+.

It's just gathering dust.

I never thought I would hear that from you!

I found it unwieldy to carry around with me. And with Rockbox on the Clip+ and a 9 band equaliser and DNSe3 on the U5, the X doesn't sound greatly better to my ears.

Maybe when Sony releases a 64GB A series here, but then only if it comes down in price.

The opposite here, been using mine more and more with the buil-in n/c earphones. Been too hot and humid this summer and I've had just about enough hearing my fan running. Not anymore :D

Too hot for closed headphones!

I'm listening with ie8s; the SQ of the X isn't better than the Clip+ or U5 or E2.

I would say the SQ of the X is comparable to the Sansa Clip(+), however the EQ on the X is far superior.  No FLAC with the X though..

The SQ of the X is definately better than all the Samsung players I have had. (K3, Q2, P3), however the P3 comes very close and it is definitely possible I misjudged and they are equal.

Have not heard any Cowon players =(

The U5 sounds very like the P3 to me - I loved the P3's sound, the U5 has DNSe3 also - albeit a slightly stripped down version.

Rockbox on the Clip+ is so configurable - I can make the Clip+ sound as good as the Sony.

EQ-wise  I don't believe Sony are any better than Samsung, Sansa (with Rockbox) or Cowon.

I've had 4 Cowons, 3 Samsungs, 3 Sansas 2 Sonys and a Zen (easily the worst.)

From reading all of this I thought the X was one of the best players SQ wise, But it's only as good as a clip/fuze?

If those players are Rockboxed, then yes, I'd say so.

Would a 5th gen iPod video also be equal since that can be rockboxed too?

Edit - Using IE8's as the earphones

Get real people, your sansas are average at best.

If you put songs in WAV do they play losslessly?  I've got about 30 songs that I don't want gaps inbetween but the Sony doesn't do lossless from what I remember
