Hugo TT 2 by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread

Your second picture seems to show how your electronics are normally positioned for listening.

If that's true, then I have two setup suggestions:
  1. the USB cable needs to be kept away from the dual-BNC cables as the RF crap in the USB cable is something you don't want to get in to your dual-BNCs.
  2. M Scaler looks like it's sat next to your TT2. HMS puts out lots of RF noise so it should be placed 2 or 3 feet away from TT2. If you don't have space in your furniture to place it two or more shelf levels down (certainly not just one level), place it on the floor. You can lean it against the wall with its sockets pointing upwards to make it easy to route all of the BNC cables. With automatic input selection on HMS there is no reason to press any buttons or change settings with the remote control.
@Jawed, my system has worked best for me so far being contained on my one Solid Steel audio gear rack. The second photo was taken so that I could better get the SRC.DX and it’s connection points into the frame. Yes I am fully aware of the RFI that is coming from the HMS. When my 1m WAVE Storm BNC arrives from the UK for the SRC.DX, I’ll then be able to place the HMS either on the floor or on a separate rack of it own. Of course this means that I’ll have to rearrange my components, and most likely acquire a longer USB cable, because the USB that I’m using now is only a .75m. This setup was dictated by the very small amount of space that we had in our former townhouse. But now we have quite a bit more living space, and I’ll be able to make the requisite adjustments. Thank you for your kind suggestions.

I received my TT2 back from the shop. Full board change to cure a weird, persistent, never-before-encountered channel imbalance issue. The first and second attempts to fix it earlier this year did not (stock PSU changes in each case, one directly from Chord).

How many have had the TT2 back from warranty and been thoroughly impressed with how insanely good it sounds? Wow! I feel like I read a few others say something to this effect, but can't remember how many.

Is it because I had stepped down to the Hugo 2 for a few weeks, or could my first unit have been under-performing in other aspects too? I don't think I've ever heard it sound so good, I am impressed and can't stop listening.

Now I worry I did not give the M Scaler a full chance before selling it. What if the minor improvements I heard with it would have in fact been much bigger with this repaired, 100% functioning unit I have now?

Many thanks to Chord support.

@CaptainFantastic, I think what you’re hearing is the quantitative leap in performance from your Hugo2 to that of the TT2. When you add the HMS to the TT2 the combination becomes world class, and can match or better almost any DAC on the market today! With the addition of LPS(linear power supply) units, and some really good BNC interconnects between the two, it steps up the performance even more.

Did this problem "develop" or was it there from day 1?

I’d swear the same thing, i was without mine for 2 weeks and it sounded incredible when the board was replaced. Hard to know if there was a change or just absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Did this problem "develop" or was it there from day 1?

It first occurred after a month or more (brand new unit), but at that time it was happening some 30% of the time. I first noticed it with a lower impedance headphone. But I had also paired the TT2 with my tube amp a lot (Christmas period need for warmth) and there was never an issue with an external amp.

But slowly it increased to 60% of the time with all headphones when using the TT2 alone.

Anyway, I understand it was a crazy, isolated case. But I do know it wasn't my system, setup, power, etc. as we tested it in multiple locations, systems.

Anyone using 3 or 4 IsoAcoustics OREA Graphite Isolation Pucks with the TT2?
And if so- where did you place the OREA's when the TT2 already has 4 rubber feet? Place the feet on top of the pucks?
What am i missing here?
Thanks
O'

Must be. They look good at that price i might try them. Even if they make no difference to the sound they look very professional. Possibly just to the side of each foot. At the very least they act as decouplers stopping vibrations from the surface reaching the dac. But then again so could any small hard object.
