HQPlayer Impressions and Settings Rolling Thread

Managed to find this old comment from Miska:

"The 512+fs has increased audio band SNR, but the noise slope starts earlier (still above 100 kHz). While the regular one at DSD512 would have noise slope starting above 200 kHz. This combined with analog post-filters of a particular DAC makes slight difference above 100 kHz (nothing major though).

Point of 512+fs modulators is that you don't really need more than a bit over 100 kHz for audio. So instead of 200+ or 400+ (DSD1024) of audio bandwidth, we settle with 100 - 200 kHz and instead use the extra bitrate to focus on increased theoretical SNR in that 100 kHz band. This is especially important when you do mixing, EQ, digital volume and such to DSD512+ outputs"

Anyhow, the regular version sounds better to my ears than the 512+fs version...
I've always preferred 512+fs versions when oversampling to DSD512. DSD256 and below I obviously use regular versions of the modulators.

I also don't find the new -fast modulator bright sounding at all. This might be because I've been using -light variant for a while now. I agree that the -super is the softest, smoothest and easiest sounding but it can bee too much of a good thing with some material. There's also more attack and punch with -fast IMO. What -fast offers over -light is more 3D, open and slightly fuller sound. I very much enjoy the new -fast modulator.

Also the ASDM7ECv3 is sharper sounding to my ears compared to -fast and the pre 5.11 -light also. I haven't done much listening with the -light after the 5.11.0.1 release so no comment on that.

I wonder if anyone has tried the new jplay iOS “stop control socket after inactivity” option, that Marcin claimed he worked with Miska on this and would actually improve sound quality of hqplayer? Guilty as charged, I don’t always go back to do critical listening comparison to confirm if sound quality actually improved. I simply just checked the box and forget about it just because it’s there and it’s suppose to “improve sound” 😆

I do notice it makes jplay iOS just a touch not as snappy as before when the option is checked.

First I would like to thank you for pointing out this option that I was not aware of. To your question, activating this option definitely improved the sound quality. I used a value of 12000 and didn't fell any negative impact on the app responsiveness. The only effect was, better bass definition, better instruments separation and timbre in addition to a larger and more 3D soundstage. :ok_hand:

Glad that it’s making a positive impact for you. I don’t mean the value but the option to stop control socket tho

Can anyone help
I've just received the holo audio red and was working fine yesterday
i get no sound using hqplayer with roon and jplay.
The red is connected on the same network as my mac so i set up HQP as local host in roon.
I'm using IIS from the red to audial s5
I've attached images of my settings settings?

try changing the device in picture three in the drop down to the other red device that should be present.

Back End you set at : NETWORK DEIVCE
OUput should be: an NAA address (HQP NAA Protocol) from your DAC/Streamer

If you Set OUTPUT: to USB.
Backend should be: ASIO or WASAPI coming from your computer.

Can anyone help

Hi,
first thing i see, it looks like youre button to allow connections from internet is unchecked - look on the button on my hqplayer window:

second, if it still not work, change output setting to Enhanc USB, this works for me :)
USB 2.0 is for use with Coax or AES cable.

Thanks for your help
I swapped over to my Gustard x30 and used the same settings and works perfectly with IIS with the only option I have in HQP using the RED: USB AUDIO
I don't have a option for Enhanc USB
must be something to do with the red as HQP works with usb directly to my Mac
I can get it to play through the red and all looks good but there is just no sound.

Have you verified the dip switches for i2s are correctly set for the red to communicate with the device in question?

Correct, if the red is connected via usb in to the Mac, then USB out won’t work.

It could be in many ways. IME it was usually the inability of a device to send/accept the signal being too much/beyond its capability.
It cound be in your network (switch/cable), Parameters beyond your source or output choice (Accepting DSD512 when streamer could only accept DSD256, or sending to SPDIF in 384PCM where it can send only at 192PCM), processing power of chip (upsampling to DSD512 when it can do only DSD256).

Found this a few months ago...when I tried to send DSD512 on my DDC/Streamer and had similar reasults. And to find out later in its manual taht my unit could accept only thru LAN and USB DSD256.

Did you check the Button for Network connection, as i mentioned before?
On your picture, its look like the button is unchecked.
