Please note that while it is very easy to replace the GanQi Bay standard card which comes with the HM-801 (as per pictures above, which could be clearer), you must be careful not to break the little plastic tabs (2) that hold the card down and in place inside the amp bay. The amp cards simply slot into the pin connector to the left chassis of the player; then the card is tucked down under the two plastic side supports just to keep it in place.
 
When you are first replacing the standard card with the Balanced Amp, the tendency is to press the plastic tabs inwards to disengage them from holding the current card: just a little too much pressure causes the cheapish tabs to break ! So be careful first timers !

I get at most 5 hours with HE-500 and perhaps 6 hours with JH13

Nishy, I am contemplating changing my HM-801 amp module over to the balanced one. I have had a look at this on Youtube:

and I am a bit confused as all it seems to show is steps 5 to 10 in the pictures above. What are steps 1 to 4 in the picture above as there is no text with the pictures above?

Hi, These pictures are a bit confusing! Just stick to that YouTube video as all you need to do is simply unscrew two screws off the cover, carefully depress the two side clips that hold the existing card in place, pop it out and simply replace it with the Balance Amp. Then close up. That's it. The Balanced Amp card is great! Best, Nishy.H

Has anyone listened to the lcd-2 r2 using the balanced amp card?, does it have enough juice to properly power them??  Thanks

I would expect so, it powers HE-500 just fine both volume and dynamics/headroom

Yes it powers the LCD's very well-better than it does the HE 500's

Thanks Irvine, great to know, is it comparable to amps such as the lyr or the sr71b, or not even close?  Anything else you could about the lcd-2r2/hm-801 balanced combo?  I really appreciate it

I've never heard the Lyr but to my ear it is as good as if not better than the sr71b.It is a really excellent portable setup and comparable to many desktop rigs with the right headphones

I'm confused. Is the Schiit Lyr equal to the Stepdance or the HM-801 balanced module equal to the Stepdance...?

I think that what we are saying is that the HM-801 balanced module is about equal to both SR71-B and Stepdance in quality and that the Stepdance flavor is closer to HM-801 than the SR71-B flavour. I expect that SR71-B has the largest voltage swing so in theory should be the one best capable of driving very demanding loads
