HIFIMAN Releases New Flagship DAP "R2R2000"
May 14, 2021 at 3:51 AM Post #1,696 of 1,984
I knew it! Everytime I get excited about Hifiman products, they teach me a lesson with their QC.

Today I got an r2r2000 red directly from hifiman online store for $654. I thought it would be a great deal, but my copy has significant noise from the left channel in HIFI mode. The only way to get rid of the noise is swtiching to ECO mode - a solution that is far from ideal.

The sound is pretty good though. Even just in ECO mode, this little device can drive focal utopia for a decent listening session (I mean decent for a portable device).

Just emailed customer service to solve the problem. I'll return it if there is no good copy for a replacement. Sigh...
Is it sold out?

I suspect that the R2R2000 is end of line :frowning2: I'm an expat in China, owning the Red R2R2K, I wanted to pickup a black R2R2K and was told by my local authorised dealer that it was no longer available. If so great shame as size for size nothing compares to the R2R2K's SQ.

Sadly I have zero interest in the HM1000 series as the device is dependant on a smartphone and that I don't need...

If Hifiman reverts to developing standalone DAP's I'll come back. Slave devices to a Smartphone, forget it...

Although I was skeptical about that in the past, having a smartphone strapped to a DAC/amp has its perks :)

Yeah, agreed, just not for me. There's times where I want to completely decouple and simply enjoy music for what it is. I want my music to flow and get lost in it, without any consideration for the phone and it's complications.

I like and I want standalone DAP's as they have one purpose and they mostly deliver. I'm interested in ifi products,, however will be far more interested in a DAP with similar features...

Aye, I can resonate with this. I still have an old Sansa DAP I use once a while when I'm riding a bike. All good!

And here we go;

Two options so far standard and balanced cards, with Hifiman's own proprietary R2R DAC. Performance is stated to equal the R2R PCM1704 DAC's, also noted that although some specs are quoted output power is omitted so far.

Link to HM901R
Technical measurement's from an external source
Much discussion on the HM901R's technical merits or not as the case maybe

As ever with Hifiman's players it's prudent to wait a little and see how they develop :) Sadly as suspected it strongly looks like that the R2R2K is no more :frowning2:

Looks interesting though. Himalaya would be their own DAC chip it seems?

Yes is a proprietary DAC, although more like an FPGA plus resistors than an R2R chip looking at it. I'd like to listen, equally not enough on face value to swap out the R2R2K. L&P P6 Pro is still the top of the R2R food chain for portables, equally at cost nor perfect in execution.

The actual picture of 901R "chip" does not look super compact. It's pure marketing - not really a dac chip.

For those that have both

But you already know, if you have with R2R :sunglasses:

Delta Sigma DAC's are a factor of manufacturing cost not audio quality/reproduction. R2R is a very different animal and why if I opt for a DAC/Amp will be iFi as it's got to be R2R...

Listening on the R2R2K now, it's absolutely the most realistic sound you can get in such a small package. You either get R2R or you don't, if you do music will never sound the same, but you already know that...
