hmm, im still intrigued why 901r gets so good reviews, "magic sound" and all that bs, they write you must use good amp card (balanced), did you use balanced one?
Well just buy it man, since you like the wording of the feedback it gets. As I say never used it with my computer. And BTW if you use a dac it bypasses the soundcard which is a dac. It is fed bit perfect data stream.

Don't forget about hm1k. There are versions with classic r2r chips, as well as Himalaya version. I have the latter and find it enjoyable. Not true r2r sound like my hm603s with Phillips tda. But still good. Better than ru6 and fc6 dongles I've moved on from.

Aliexpress has many enjoyable r2r portables , like w510 and l1387 portable. Using proper Phillips chips.

Himalaya and modern r2r imitations through fpga (cayin, fiio, hiby etc) are interesting solutions, but lack some core r2r attributes. Technicalities are improved, while trading off some analog timbre magic.

Listening to hm1k Himalaya with ex800st right now, very enjoyable no lie. Very creamy and inviting musicality.

That's the quintessence of audiophile talk - when comparing two digital devices we discuss the "trade off of analogue magic and creamy musicality".

No pun intended, I love poetry. And I do agree that they do sound differently and one might prefer a certain sound.

I own hm1000 (silver), also hm603/601 (and the modded one with ad1866 to) and some other nice r2r's :) i do have cayin r01 (6ii) too - and hile its pretty nice, its just too detailed and does not sound same as 1704 chips. I just wonder if himalaya is close to the 801/603 sound which i like a lot with that nice warm n rich "wet" sound with kicking bass, the problem with them is lack of modern interfaces (and size n charging). Maybe i have too many plyers, have the ak/ess ones too (i still think hdp10 is one of best sabre portables).

One exception for sigma delta sources are dethonray devices, they simply sound superb , i know they dont meassure "best"... all that sinad(thd) nonsense is useless, people dont even understand what those measurements mean (thd below 0.5% is not event audible). I got them all and all have massive big full sound that just moves you from a chair.

Word. Proud owner of sg1 special edition gold here.

Ie900 with Himalaya: wet, just like you like it, thickened midbass and low mids. Bass has impressive impact and weight, deep 3d staging with vocals lift. Ie900 with sg1 gold: dry, excellent vertical extension both ways to deep sub and high treble, accurate imaging with tall stage.
btw. where did you buy your himalaya? did you try hm901r?
Hifiman directly. No longer available though. Haven't tried 901r personally but supposedly it has worse dac section than hm1k yet amp section could be an improvement over hm1k with right amp card. I'm more concerned with dac part since hm1k has good line outs that i can run to any amp I want to.

Ordered hm901r :) hm-1000 silvers is excellent, it is super-detailed, dynamic, wet, rich (again, im aware of the "measurements" of the quad and i really dont care, I also own MA9 Alex mod with blackgate caps, which sounds very very similar and on other hand measures superbly, once again, the thd measurements have nothing to do with audible quality, i also own many those 130+ db super-cirrus chip dongles, and they all sound crap dry ear piercing, i think we need to revise what measurements should be done on sound).

IE900 is dope... its the level of Shure 846, obviously not so articulated but the bass rumble makes up it all, been comparing it for few weeks to: PFE232 (this is still king of iems), Shure 846 (articulated subwoofer monster), Fiio FD7 (suprprisngly superb iems, but u need tright tips and the thinner tubes are better imo), IE600 (also nice but its just different sound), 7hertz timeless (very good indeed), JH16 and so more in my collection xD

My Cayin 6ii r01 Ti will go for sale im afraid... ;)
