Maximum SDHC 32 GB Class 4 is allowed. Class 6+ doesn't work properly. It's been stated throughout all of the threads.

Hello xabu

To prove if this is your card or not, try playing the same tracks from the HM-801 internal memory. If they play ok, then it's your card, if they still don't play do they play ok from your computer?

For MP3 the HM-801 does not like ID3v2.3 Tags and works better with v 1.nn. A quick google search for FLAC finds 'by default dbpoweramp uses ogg tags, unless you tell it id3v2', so can you try converting again using the default and let us know how you get on

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the correct thread for my question, but I didn't find anything explicit via search.
I just got my Hifiman (Firmware 0.19) and I have a question.

Is anybody able to navigate via Album, and if so how did you encode your music files, which program, which ID Tag Version (ID3v2.2 or ID3v2.3)?
I have ripped my music from CD via dbpoweramp as uncompressed wav and then converted to flac with ID3v2.3 Tags.
But using the Album entry it shows only this "No file!" message.

My findings so far...

SanDisk 32 GB class 10:

wav with Vorbis comments: Single track plays back wonderfully via SD card menu entry but does not show up in Album menu entry and there is a cracking sound and aprox. two sec pause between tracks.

wav with ID3v2 comments: same as with Vorbis comments.

flac with ID3v2 comments: Single track plays back wonderfully via SD Card menu entry but does not show up in Album menu entry and there is a aprox. two sec pause between tracks. No cracking sound!

Internal Flash Memory:

wav with Vorbis comments: same as on SD card.
wav with ID3v2 comments: same as on SD card.
flac with ID3v2 comments: same as on SD card.

Tested with Muse Absolution, transitions between first, second and third track e.g.
Sounds great even on my beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro (250 ohm) ... still waiting for my new beyerdynamic Tesla T 50 P mobile headphones ...

By the way, is a Sansa clip able to playback uncompressed wav or flac? Is it able to store uncompressed data without end? Is mp3 a high fidelity audio format ;-)?
(I followed this other thread with much amusement ...)

And, I've seldom had equipment which worked that flawless via USB connection on my computer. Just great!

Well back to the test: seems it is not a problem with the card?

Update:

Internal Flash Memory:

mp3 with ID3v1 comments: Shows up in Album and Artist menu entry and plays wonderfully but there is an aprox. two sec pause between tracks (o.k. we know there is no gapless support for mp3 yet).

SanDisk 32 GB class 10:

So, I think it's pretty clear that it is NOT a problem with the SanDisk 32 GB class 10 card, very unfortunately ...

Back to the question in my frist post:
Does anybody know a program with wich to convert ID3v2 tags in Flac files to ID3v1 tags?
But according to dbpoweramp forum flac does not support ID3v1 ...

Well any recommendation for a program with wich to convert my wav files into a lossless format with ID3v1 tags which will show up in Album (and perhaps also Artist, which would be even better) menu entry?

Or will there be a firmware update in the near future which supports ID3v2 tags in flacs or even better Vorbis tags?

Well, time to listen to some music just for the sake of listening to the music ....

With the new firmware, I do not expect much improvement in sound quality, but if there is progress, it is very good ) If not - sadly. Do not worry, I'll be able to notice even a slight difference in sound. But we want to sound finally began to go out of their place in the headphones, this is not what you think, he-he ) I have to listen the sound played through headphones with the right perspective and tone. Normal full customization of player, I think by the experience, lasts no less than two years. When properly configured, no people, to listen the player on some headphones and one configuration at any time of year and in any mood - should not find fault.

The cheaper Kingston chips are the way to go, they aren't class 10. It is a Class 4, alot of other chips have issues with the 801 from what i have read.  I did pick up a scan disc chip that is working that is 8g but it is also a class 4.

Edit- sorry i see this was already answered.

Internal memory.  I have never even used it, i though it was for firmware updates???? Can you put music on it, if possible how much.....I have never even opened via computer(except to update firmware), always just put card into computers slot and pull music over.

Xabu

The Muse album track 1 is an intro track and should play gapless into track2. The 2 second gaps on the other tracks sound normal, try them on your computer software player

As for the tag info, FLAC has it's own tags so you shouldn't be using id3, I'm on a mac so don't use dbpoweramp. Not sure why you're ripping to WAV and then converting but found the following for FLAC:

Hi ade_hall,

thanx for the link, but I tried to do this exactly as described; I even ripped from CD directly to flac with vorbis tags. no difference. nothing shows up via menu entry Album ...
No difference wether in internal flash or with san disk card.
And as mentioned earlier no problem to actually play the files via SD card or Internal flash menu entry.

Meanwhile support told me I should send it back for replacement because of the cracking noise at the end when playing back wav files.
But honestly i'd like to avoid the extra cost and hassle of sending back.

Perhaps you have some functioning (show up via menu entry Album)  flac files you could send me, so I could test them on my player?

(I ripp to wav because it is the recommended file format for archiving CDs, because it is bit exact and you can always reproduce the CD exactly as it has been, bit by bit)

Same with FLAC!

Anyway, I rip on a Mac using Max:

http://sbooth.org/Max/

Absolutely zero problems on the HM-801.

Hang on I'm confused. Are you saying you use FLAC files ripped with Max on your HM-801 with no problems?
More off topic; Can I suggest checking out XLD? When set up correctly, (in my opinion) it's a far superior program.

Trogdor, you're right :-) ... but somehow wav feels better for me, cause it isn't compressed. For archiving I like to have it as close as possible to the CD (best would be an image, but that you cannot play on the 801).

Back to my Album menu entry problem:

I ripped same songs now with EAC (which supports ID3v1).
Voila, they show up in the Album and Artist menus.

Conclusion ---> flacs ripped with dbpoweramp do not show up in 801 Album and Artist menus.
Conclusion ---> flacs ripped with EAC do show up in 801 Album and Artist menus.

More findings:

1.
It seems, that the 801 is not yet capable of playing gapless any format, even the lossless ones which should be gapless by default, no special coding necessary.
Only solution I see right now is to rip a whole album as one wav file and place it in an Artist / Album folder structure on the SD card; via SD Card menu entry it is navigable than by Artist and it is gapless.
Only thing missing with this solution is the ability to play single tracks. But that's a minor problem for me, since I always listen to a full album.

Perhaps I do not have to send it back after all ...

2.
No problem with 32 GB SanDisk Extreme cards. That's nice because ripped albums are copied faster.

3.
When playing consecutive single wav files there is a click sound between two tracks (confirmed by support); listening with high volume maybe I exaggerated a bit describing it as a loud cracking sound.
Well, apart from my personal solution mentioned above, I'm not yet quite sure if all this is acceptable for me.

Realy great sound though ...!

I have to sleep on that ...

Every single day,  I have zero issues with my FLAC files and HM-801.

The lack of gapless playback doesn't bother me because like Jude I use it as a portable desktop amp/DAC to and fro work.  Eventually though the JH-3A may change that.

The 801 can read .cue sheets, and if you're ripping in EAC as a single track range, you can have it create a .cue to go along with it that has all of the track beginning and end points. I haven't tried it, but I assume the .cue file should allow you to jump around the single .wav or .flac file to play the track you want. I think that's the only way to get gapless AND direct track selection.

I've noticed that mine has a clicking sound when powering up, and when jumping when a track is playing to a new track, but not when playing one track consecutively after another. I just turn it way down when switching tracks, and I turn it on before plugging my headphones in.
