I honestly think imma go grill-less for now. I don't see much danger and it seems the best option anyways for best SQ. As for pads, I already have jergpads with foam wedge inserts specially made for me by Ryan, so hah.

i did grill less (well my grill holes were huge and no cloth) for almost 6 months without problems while using my he500 for 5 hours a day at least! and this is what i did to keep them in good condition:
 
..u just have to keep them save from dust when not using (most part of the day)..so this was my daily routine...very easy!!
 
1. put them ALWAYS in a bag or in a desk draw (dust free ofcourse!) after use,
2. brush ur hair before u put them on so u get rid of ur loose hairs
3. clean the pads with ur fingers a bit...u will be surprised how much hair/dust there is on them (especially the velours ones)
4. and last many people forget..if u use a comfy chair on which ur head rests...tab that a few times to loose the dust and ur hairs of the other day

and ofcourse ventilate ur listening room regulary and let vacuum a bit...

and it helps if ur house is practically dustfree and has low moist levels ..like i have here

Of course it won't hurt to do all of that, but I honestly think all you need to do is #2. Dust in my house is above normal mainly because of many Persian rugs and carpet. But I still don't see any dust buildup at all.

Very special. He sprinkled some of his own magic on it too. Makes them smell and sound 100x better. Hahah anyways, phillyd, you can just do all the steps without the velour top.

  Having two left hands + physically trying to modify expensive electronic items that -I hope- haven't been designed by fools are imo an unholy combo so I refrain from physical mods.  More power to those who do 'em but there's a lot more potential for screwing things up than by eq'ing the sound via software where the reset button is only a click away.  I'm not even mentioning warrant issues and resale value.

i, being a very demanding person (for myself but also towards others!) and who had very special things going through my hands,can attest that ryan makes real art with the pads he makes...i was one of the first having a pair and had it checked out by  a few people around me in my friends circle...one being a professional in audio in the highest sense of the word and my own mum and my lovely wife...first was to check if it was technically made perfectly...soundwise! and that guy said lieterey that those pads looked like that they were made by a premium brand! and my wife and mum, especially my mum, who was the first needle specialist (dont know how to say that in english..she was the senior person who was in charge of modifying fashion at the last minute during important fashion shows) for a pretty wellknown designer.....so she knows a thing or two about sewing etc. and my wife fisnished some kind of fashion design college and actually designed pretty nifty thingies fashionwise...and botb said that ryan, with his sewing skills and perfect attention to detail and workmanship, could work perfectly for a fashion designer as a master sewer (with some extra experience ofcourse..lolz)..
 
and i trust those people..so pls respect what ryan did with his bare hands..i cant even imagine what that manual sewing does to his fingers! i only have big respect for him! and the he500 sounds so much better with his pads (especially with the opengrill mod)... and for the price its a steal!

Ryan was and is one of the nicest people I've talked to (of course Koiloco applies here as well, and now Sonido B)) and is extremely patient with everything. I respect him so much, and can definitely say that he is a professional at this job of his now
 
Mine came flawless and he was generous enough to include some spare "parts" as well as those foam inserts that IMO expand on the idea of the back vents by making them much more angled (this also helps with making sure your ears don't touch the dust filter material as if these pads were as thick as the velours).

I know my friend (how is the weather in india?)..i was referring to another post before u..it was a post in general... I have a feeling some people just dont know how much effort ryan puts in his pads... I think that mr. Fang at least could have given him a new 400i to modify the pads on

(To those on the US East coast, don't laugh) It's still bloody cold here, temperatures should normally be about 30 centigrade during daytime but we barely hit 20.  I have my AC in heating mode if you can believe it.  I've gotten used to the heat here after 6 years, coming back to Europe in september (for a couple of years I hope) will be grim. But I've got an F3-amp coming up that will do very nicely as a space heater.  Pity that the DV 337 AND my HE-6 are in Europe right now (HE-6 without proper amp is just not a good idea and regrettably, all my good gear is  heavy and/or fragile so I have to make do with my HE-500 and a puny O2 dac/amp).  How are things with your blue circle and what is it exactly that you're getting?

What is there to be gained by physically modding the headphones over just using the EQ. . EQ is so much faster and much more able to make chAnges in amounts incremental . So why not. Help me understand .

No, please explain if you have the time.  Specifically, while I agree that an equalizer isn't the end-all solution to a 'problem' with the sound, it sure looks a lot easier to fiddle around with that rather than adapting the hardware itself.  In the latter case I suppose most people doing this will go about it the intuitive/empirical way and will not be able to first build some kind of simulation or set about developing some extremely complex 3-D model taking into account the frequencies involved, reflection/absorbtion by various materials etc.  So (and this is a genuine question):  apart from being permanent, what are the benefits of a hardware mod over equalising?

EQ can't reduce distortion for example. Nor can it reduce resonances or very peaky response (like peaky treble for example). Else, you could just EQ any headphone to sound like an hd800 for example.
 
Really, EQ can only do so much.. Resonances, peaks/dips and distortion really matters.
