I swapped out the factory tubes in the Lyr 2 for some new matched Gold Lions, and the HE1000's took another step up in performance ("liquidity"  and "air" improved, plus, greater pace and articulation). Very nice cans that show off the capabilities of the system upstream.

True dat, went from portable electronics to my turntable/stereo, HEK gets even better if you feed it from better gear!

I got to listen to the HE-1000 today with a Moon Audio 430HA, and I compared them to LCD-3Fs, which I also own personally. They dident amaze me, they are just different. LCD-X is most similar in the Audeze line, obviously.
To me they sounded thinner, faster and a little less bassy. They are extremly comfertable tho, but I dont wanna pay 1000 for added comfort.

Yeah my feeling is the Audeze is the strongest competition. The HEK are probably be a bit better technically as they are not muddy sounding, but unfortunately they are a bit limp, soft and lacking focus comparatively (I blame the magnets/driver mostly). The latter is not an issue with the LCD-3s for example. Noting my top 4 (obtainium) headphones are in no particular order: HD800s, HE-6s, SR009s, Abyss, with some gap to the formerly mentioned, I would actually choose the LCD-3s before the HEK, while having other better flagships. Despite the mudiness. The LCD-s have balls and are more energetic and thus engaging. And better mids. All imo.

However if I had to have only one flagship between the HEK and LCD-3Fs, I would choose the HEK. That is if I could not amp and mod the HE-6s properly, or could not afford and amp the Abyss well, or unable to system match well, mod properly and need the sub-bass HD800s cannot give. And wouldn't want to go into stats.

HE1K to be delivered on Tuesday. Will compare with the Abyss on the Moon 430 after giving them 150 hours burn in. Should be fun, heard so many conflicting comments.

Man, think I'm giving up on portable gear. Listening to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk, recent 180 gm reissue, going from my LP12 to the Pro-Ject tuned Phono amp straight into the MicroZOTL, instead of the preamp headphone jack. More open, wide, bit more "meat on the bones" initial impression, though haven't compared head to head. Really enjoying this vinyl/HEK combo, though, haven't listened to this much vinyl in who knows how long!

Do you have a cable waiting for them?  I know you was looking at some cable options.

Unfortunately not. I'll be getting the DHC cable but was given the sound advice to see which headphone I preferred and hence making that the cable default, using an adapter for the other pair.

Had Norne balanced cable delivered yesterday, but no one was home to sign for it. Probably won't get it until Tuesday :sob:

Anyone heard the Goldmund HDA ? What's so special about it ?
