Wow, that graph really shows the dip at 2khz, and the hump at 4khz, very troublesome.  Now I know why mine (vocals) sounded so much better with Parametric EQ, +3db at 2khz, and -5db at 4khz!

I would be interested to see you graph the HE-400i!  Thanks for the post!

The length of 15kHz sine wave is 2.2cm, so if the distance between driver and grill is about 1cm then it's possible that reflection nullifies it. That could explain why removing the grill can make the sound more airy.

I think Tyll probably has graphs out before 400i gets to local shops here for testing.. :)

Need to find some loose grill material to see how much things change compared to none. I guess I should try stock without the grill fabric too.

But for sure taking out the grills helps a bit, I heard some less edgy sibilance before even measuring. Equing 9k down slightly it's easily simulated. I like the slight added warmth also. Not sure if the soundstage improved that much.

No desire to ditch out HD800 yet, it just adds a completely another dimension to the sound. But I don't think I can give out the HE560 either, pretty perfect bass level, more intimate and slightly less edgy sound, almost as comfy on the head (but it does warm up ears a bit).. aww shucks.. it's a good can to have some modding fun too. Still need to try out if it's good with the Realiser.

Yeah trying out HE400 at the shop reminded how crappy the old ones feel on head. Not to mention how crappy and weird HE400 sounded when I had both 560 and HD800 for reference there.. I bared to listen it for a minute.
