Based on what I've read, magni/modi 2 stack, would be a good pairing for the money, but definitely not enough for the amp to reach their potential. (modi2 should suffice as a dac, lyr 2 from schiit seems to be highly recommended here as an amp)
Not sure about m1060.

So I returned my defective he560 to Walmart and got a refund. I'm debating whether I should give them another try at $400, or go with the m1060.

I've read conflicting reviews. Most seem to say that the he560 are better, but they reportedly require a powerful amp to reach their full potential. I currently have a schiit magni 2/modi 2 stack
NVM. I read back a few posts and saw that one side failed. OTH, there has been some spotty QC on all levels of Hifiman Headphones historically.

What was wrong with the 560s that you got?
I had considered a second pair at that price...

I would not recommend the Shiit Stack that you have for the 560. It is a bit on the bright side of neutral.
I think the 560 benefits with something on the warm side of neutral. I listened to mine for a good while with a Teac UD 301 driving a Gustard H10 or One of the Garage 1217 amps. Polaris (SS) or Ember (if you like tube rolling).

BTW, the Teac will play most all formats, including DSD, which the Schiit stuff will not.

Mentioning these because buying on Massdrop or used can get you reasonably close to the pricing on the Magni/Modi.

It doesn't have to be an expensive one though. I've been through some decent headphone amps, but I preferred my emo over my last 2 amps. https://emotiva.com/products/amplifiers/100
You can keep the modi. Sell the magni.
Budda boom, Budda bing. Lol

Edit: Jumpers need put in for full benefits if using the headphone jack for single ended. Or you can tap the binding posts.

I agree with the others that the Magni2 would not be a amp for the HE560 but the Modi2 will do great as a DAC. While I like my Lyr2 with the HE560 if cost is an issue then I would go with a Teac UD-301 as both DAC and amp, you can find them used on ebay for $249. While the amp section is not the most powerful its a touch on the warmer side and does quite well with the HE560.

I think I'll buy the HE 560 and stick with the magni for the mean time. I don't want to spend money on an amp yet.

I don't live far from schiit, so I was thinking down the line I can got to The Schiitr and audition their higher end equipment. The Lyrr 2 and Jotunheim are interesting

Had one doubt. Wouldn't EQ solve the problem of being too bright (resulting from amp being either neutral or slightly on the brighter side, but is able to drive the HP's properly). Or is there anything else, which can't be corrected by EQ?

I think its possible to use EQ to "correct" the brightness but its not brightness its self but the harshness or edginess of the highs that is the problem with some amps that I feel is the problem.

You have enough quality power to ring your ears. I'd be more concerned with which headphones float your boat.

Hi everyone,
Is the he560 more neutral than the he500? And for those who know, is it the most neutral headphone I can get that has best synergy with the schiit lyr2?

To answer the first part, imo, yes.
The second part is very subjective.
Personally, I think the 560 is very neutral, but one persons neutral , can be another person's warm or analytical.
From what I've owned I think the 560, along with the HD700, fits right in between the HD800, and HE500. With the 700, possibly a little north of neutral.

All my opinion though
Cheers

Agree with @Guidostrunk that the HE560 is more neutral than the HE500.
I would not consider the HE560 neutral, a little bright to me if the HD600 is my reference for neutral.
Synergy with the Lyr2 is quite good, might need to roll some slightly warmer tubes for some.

Could anyone please share some impressions about the bass quality and quantity on the HE560 compared to the HD700.

I really like the bass quality on the HD700 but could wish for some more subbass impact. I've only heard the HE560 once and not in any of my own systems so some thoughts about its subbass (in comparison to the HD700) would be highly appreciated.

To my ears, the 560 has fuller and deeper bass. The 700's are more precise but hit pretty hard. I think impact is equal. I give the nod to the 560's in the bass department for sure.

Just one man's opinion though. Cheers

Edit: Forgot to mention that system synergy plays a big role for both. 560's to me , sound their best with more juice thrown at them.
