My wife and I have separate bank accounts for personal items so we’ve actually never had a fight related to financial decisions.

We go on two major vacations a year and I still buy jewelry and that kind of stuff once in a while.
We still take the major trips... but since retirement our finances are now twined. She's done with jewels, just some flowers and a deposit into the grand childs college fund.
Most of the gear I’ve bought has been on an upgrade and trade model so I’ve only ever outright owned five or six headphones at a time. I’m basically always looking to upgrade and trade until I find items that I can’t live without.
Sage, thats been my mode for some time, but not playing with house money anymore.
I’m at a point in the journey where the only real way to progress is to hop up to Summit-Fi tier and that’ll mean I’ll have to sell a couple of my favorites to do that which I don’t really want to do.

The 500 that I’m looking at is being sold locally and it’s only about $200 so I thought it might be fun to play around with.
Either that person doesn't know the value or something is up. Check out the headband, the mylar, and equal output from both sides. Good luck.

Good price but in margin which they generally sell now.
They went down to $350-400 in '18-'19 but $400-425 is the range recently.

Pulled one from Ebay ~€325 around 20-21 but i was fool and sold it, second one was around €370~ and sold that eventually because moved to another continent.

Would be more comfortable to drop ~$400 for one if they were not so old now, kinda bugger if driver dies which is not unheard of with older planars.

Yeah the age, cost, and bass thrill seekers scare me off from the HE-6 6 screw. Got my 500 in '18 used, for $360, but of course the cable (stock stuff is microphonic and splashy -this from a cable agnostic), pads meh, needs mods and parametric eq to max out

Wondering if the HE-500 is worth owning in 2023.
Absolutely the HE-500's are worth it these days. Listening to mine right now through the LAu (OG) for the first time in awhile. I had two at one point. Sold one to @elquixote and my current HE-500 was @TWerk's before. Nothing was different between the two of them except for the ease it was to swap TWerk's HE-500 for an Audeze headband, haha. They're very musical to my ears.

Agreed they are still worth owning in 2023.............have bought/traded/tested over 60 headphones and I'm very much satisfied with the HE-500 and HE-6SE. The 500 has all the mods including fuzzor and were in mint condition - paid $500 for them and consider it a steal at that price. Running them with a Q French Silk cable (stock connectors still) through a vintage Pioneer Spec 1 pre/Spec 2 amp rack system that has been completely recapped via the speaker taps and feel like I have my endgame two pairs of headphones. Well, still have a Denon LA7000 I still run through the paces on my work computer, a Pioneer SE Master 1 for my family room system but mostly it's HFM heaven for me.

I too run my HE-500 directly from the speaker taps of my vintage Yamaha CR-2020 and the power, grip and control is simply glorious!

They certainly respond well to high current source like a speaker amp with a bit more slam. The only issue is the higher sensitivity of the HE-500 compared to the HE-6. I can certainly hear the noise floor on some of my speaker amps that I use with my HE-500.

If it bugs you, you can always throw some resistors in the line. It shouldn't create an issue with damping like a dynamic driver would.

Sundara, hah...cups don't swivel and my big head hates that so very much, feather-light to the point that you'd wonder whether it's got any magnets in there at all and eventually it sounds thin as cigarette paper
I don't remember saying they are better by any means, just more portable and not sacrificing much of layering or timbre. I must've gotten lucky with the comfort I suppose.
