Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

Mine just arrived today. Obviously I will wait until after 150 hours burn-in time to fully assess. But really digging these so far - super clear and detailed; crazy good for $125! It does indeed have dual 3.5mm cables. I still would like to find balanced XLR cables for these. Any suggestions, y'all?

I have emailed them the following : "Hello. I recently ordered Hifiman HE 400i's. It appears that this newest version uses dual 3.5mm instead of dual 2.5mm. I see you guys offers dual 2.5mm cables for the old version and dual 3.5 mono for Focal Elears. I am not sure if these would would work on the new 400i's. If you have any advice, I would appreciate it. I really want dual 3.5mm to XLR, but as I was saying, I'm unsure if the dual 3.5mm mono used on the Elears would work or if it would require dual 3.5mm stereo connectors. If you guys could make these, I would love a 5 ft. Navy blue cable with dual 3.5mm to XLR for the newest 400i. Thank You!"

So far, I think they sound really good with classical and acoustic/ orchestral stuff. Enjoying listening to "Morning Phase" by Beck on these.

Reply from Periapt: "Yes. The our Type 8 does work with it. We have sold some for a customer with the Sundras. Working great. Thanks

So there you go.

Thanks for getting the info, a friend just got a HE400i and it also has 3.5mm jacks so good to know that mono jacks will work

What you recommend? Portability is mandatory, listening a lot with my phone.

My FiiO Q1 (the cheaper original, not the less powerful but more sophisticated Mk II) provides sufficient power to my HE400i and the bass boost is surprisingly tasteful, countering the bass roll-off without adding any boom or bloat. It won't drive them to uncomfortable levels. A short OTG cable works perfectly to connect it to my Android device.

Yeah, get the original Q1 if you'll use an Android. For an iPhone, the new FIIO Q1mkII's balanced output has sufficient power - - I use it with my iPhone and it's great. It too has a nice bass boost that I use on some tracks.

Q¹ has more power than Dragonfly Red? At this point ImI concerned about the quality of internal DAC of my OnePlus 5 and I thought a combo Amp+DAC was a better choice..

aaand how about Topping NX4 or something else? My OP5 is a very poor so I'm looking also for a good DAC+amp combo.

Topping NX4 or something else?

No personal experience, but it competes on features more with the FiiO Q1 Mk II or FiiO Q5 (which you can compare, as you can compare the Q1s) and is occasionally on Massdrop, where there is a current drop for the XDuoo XD-05 for US$159.99 - another good choice for a portable DAC/amp with some fancy features and commensurate price. You might want to consider the Q5 or similar for the Bluetooth 5 with aptX (and aptX HD) capability of your OnePlus 5.

One of my cheap and good desk DAC/amps which drives the HE400i very well - the SMSL M3 - has a current drop for US$59.99.
