Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

The relative shortcomings of the 400i only become apparent when compared to a headphone that's better than it is in those aspects.
In my case, this was the 560, which at twice the price is expected.
Case in point, the 400i is a very capable headphone, without much to fault and perfectly capable of holding its own, especially in this price range. :)

So what about T90 comparing to these ones? Did someone tested them both?

The T90 had too much treble for me personally. I know many love them, but the treble tilt made too many songs unenjoyable for me. I enjoyed the DT990 over the T90, but the he500/400i beat them both for me.

I've decided not to buy my tour 400i.  Like it, but not better than my hd600.  I owe a review/report on the tour unit and I'll do that in near future, but that's my bottom line.

Bill, you need to give the 560's a listen, I just sold my 650's, it provides the missing link between the HD 6XX and the HD800, with an added top too bottom cohesiveness of sound you can only get from a planar!

I think I have the 400i figured out. Actually have a pair on order. Compared to the 400.which I . Own. 400i has less bass, less treble. But more midrange and comfort... basically less base treble more comfort midrange. I will give my thoughts on the 2 next week

Tempting!  I spent 5 minutes w/ the 560 at a meet.  That's not enough time to evaluate, but dang nice first impression.  Weak spots were: none that I could tell.

Completely different animal alltogether. The he560 would be a better comparison.

So the HD800 completely outclass 400i? I honestly don't know, that's why I am asking. I haven't followed either of the new Hifimans for multiple months.

I will go on record here...yes, the 800 completely outclasses the 400i. And this is from someone who loves the 400i. The 800 is just in a completely different level in regards to resolution, sound staging, air, imaging etc. The 400 is more relaxing to listen to and offers a warmer signature though. In fairness, they are not intended to be competitors.

I'm looking forward to reading that, especially a comparison to the hd600!

I don't agree. . but that is what this forum is about. If the old question was asked... what would your last set of headphones be...
At one point I would have said the HD6OO I  really like them. They will not be leaving here (as long as the original premise is not fulfilled)

I have changed that thought to the HE-400i. Different ears, different brains. If you need a reason NOT to  buy the 400i,  take one persons thoughts as gospel.

BTW, if it is  a matter of budget constraints... you will be fine with your HD 600. (if you have them?)

Get what you want...

Matt.. would you consider the HE400i a good compliment to the HD800? Am looking for a good, easy to drive headphone that would be satisfying in my main rig as well as with my AK100 MkII.
Had a chance to audition the HE560 and loved them but want something easier to drive.  Still waiting for my local dealer to get the HE400i in so I can audition them side by side.

Thank you. That's what I wanted to know.

It does outclass the 400i in soundstage, air etc. HOWEVER what you prefer will depend on the music you listen to. Classical? The 800 will destroy the 400i. EDM and hip-hop? I'll take the 400i. @MickeyVee if you listen to multiple genres as I do, I would call the 800 and 400i good complements. I would definitely own both.

The 400i is a great complement to the hd800. The 800 is serious, resolving, brutally honest to the source, a bitch to drive right and not always musical. The 400i is warm, smooth, fairly forgiving and super easy to amp. One planar mag and one dynamic driver. Great complements.

Hmmm…I listen to a lot of hip hop, pop, rap and electronic stuff. Classic and jazz here and there, but mainly the previous genres mentioned.

For each of those genres I'd take the HD800 over: D2000, HE-400, HE-500, HE-6, LCD-2C, and LCD-3C.

Is the 400i specifically tuned for those genres?
