im wondering if i should upgrade the amp to my 400i's (currently modded emotiva x-mini) to either

1. Asgard 1 - $175 CAD
2. Valhalla 2 - $350 CAD
3. Lyr 1 - $365 CAD

Asgard is probably the best price:performance choice - but the Val 2 looks so damned pretty, and i would think the Lyr 1 would still be a step up over the Val 2 for not much more

The magnetic structure has very little negative space compared to the 560's.  I wonder if using a 560 magnet support plate would have opened up the 400i's soundstage.

I'm currently ABing the 400i vs 400 - and the 400i does have a slightly smaller sound stage, using "Virtual Barber" at around 2:10 the barber snaps his fingers on both sides.

Closing my eyes and placing my hands to where it feels like the source comes from its - "left" snap feels about just under a foot and a half away on the 400s and about 2-3inches closer on the 400is (i move my hand ever so slightly closer)

Both cans have been grill modded with the same type of material, and level matching using pink noise (with my android phone) at about 78db

My own ghetto experiments - but kinda fun heh

Cant find any used for that price - ordering from Schiit directly would be at least $150ish more when you factor in shipping/duty/currency conversion/pp fees

What amp are you using with your 400i? Me Asgard 2 and fiio e12 DIY

One that hardly anyone talks about...other than those that have one... See the thread. Several 400i and 560 owners over there.
The Garage1217 Polaris. If you really need (?) to mess with tubes, try the Ember from the same folks.
I have a half dozen other desktop amps. I keep coming back to the Polaris for the 400i.

I have the E12, driven by the X5, it also is very nice. It does not have the balls or the open and transparent sound of the Polaris.

Never heard the Asgard 2, but returned a Lyr 2 .. for the money it just did not flip my switch... compared to what I already have.

When I had the demo set of HE-400I, I powered them using a lyr 2 and fiio e12. The 400i's really sounded great with the Lyr 2 and the Telefunken E88CC platinum tubes.

I have the asgard 2 and its cold and clear... I was hoping a tube amp would warm things up

This is a great question for this thread.  I'd like to read about what other people are using with the 400i's.

I've got my Burson Soloist in my main rig.  As much of an objectivist as I have been over the years, the Soloist is definitely warmer and more dynamic than my other amps. I also the FiiO E10 for my laptop/kitchen table rig, and the Schiit Magni in the bedroom.  And yes, the Magni is clear and cold, just like the Asgaard.

The FiiO is amazingly good.  Not in league with the Soloist, but darn good in its own right.
