I can agree on the ether, but the dharma looks, feels, and sounds rediculous to me. The only thing that can make their sound "ok" is the DAVE. Im hoping the one I listened to were the preproduction unit....Bass was nothing impressive, mids were recessed and sibilant at the same time, and the treble is nothing close to lower end STAXes. Top headphone for me still remains the he-1000.
The dharma's have actually been receiving high praise lately. 6 moons gave it an award and I've read quite a few positive impressions. Could have been an early unit. Unfortunately I can't justify the he1000 purchase on my income. If money wasn't an issue if be all over it. I think their beautiful

MRI scan is the one with magnets =P Cat is the one with X-rays.

nothing wrong with a liddle magnetic field tickling your brain. research being done on transcranial magnetic stimulation of deep brain regions & already FDA approved for the treatment of migraines and treatment-resistant depression.

I would say if you thought the HE-1k is lacking in bass, the HE-X has an overall warmer tonality that may be along the lines of what you are looking for. Also, possibly look into the LCD-X and Pioneer SE-M1 (both even bassier options imo).

I quite liked the Pioneer SE-M1. I thought they were like an improved HD800, slightly more realistic soundstage (little smaller), tighter more impactful bass (I've not liked HD800 on most amps), and smoother treble. I think I would take the LCD-XC over the LCD-X, and I would take the Ether-C over any of those three options.

I have only seen the Dharma in pictures.... I would like to hear them, mainly due to them trying something different from the norm, but my chances of a demo in the UK are slim.
I keep telling myself that the HE-1000 would not be good for my music listening tastes, but really they are just way out of my budget.

You surely arent the only one. But the new headband has much better weight distribution and is more comfortable.. at least in theory. And many, including me, fully agree with that choice. These arent exactly the kind of phones that you take out on the street so looks shouldnt matter .. at least not much.

You are correct of course.... weight distribution and comfort is far more important with a set of home listening headphones. I really should stop harkening for the good ol' days and embrace progress.

Quick comparison of dharmas to HEK.
1. Ergonomics.
Hek wins.
The dharmas have an abnoxiously high clamping force that coupled with the thin pads, caused discomfort in a matter of minutes. Oh and they dont pivot, leaving gaps. The hek however distributes weight perfectly on my head. The deep pads did not let my ears touch the drivers whatsoever. I would rate them just below h800s and right above the stax 009 cofort wise.
2. BQ
Ehh...draw..
I had 3 hek units fly by. Each of them having at least one flaw. The dharmas had poor stitching done on the headband and pads that feel cheap. Connectors were also loose during the demo. Cables were pretruding through the....dust filter? (The ones like in the hd800 cups). They look exactly like the philips fidelio, which I personally liked more BQ wise.
3. Sound
hek
I liked the hifimans by far as the Dharmas feel like an unfinished product. They sound extremely thin. I feel that the Dharmas are more easily compared to the hd800s from sennheiser. Simply because they resemble each other more. Well I listened them through the enigma, hugo TT, and DAVE using a variety of songs. Either they need an amp from heaven to shine.....or they just arent for me. Hd800 through only a chord hugo sounded better in comparison. Hd800+hugo>dharma+DAVE imo...

I'm pretty sure this is the HE-X thread and not the HE-1000

For all I care HFM should bring back the old magnets (symmetrical ones, if the new ones can't pull it off), gold traces driver etc. Even take the HE-6s and tune/polish them some, as out of the factory gates they are not exactly a finished work of art (in both SQ and BQ). There's a reason people mod them. There's plenty they could have been done to tune the HE-6s and put a 2k price on them. These days there are even headamps that can drive them. :)

I agree. For me, all the HE-6 needed was deeper + more impactful bass, and more extended and detail highs.
huh?????

Thanks!
Were there the production version?
Apparently, preproduction sounds a lot worse (and did sound very uneven to my ears).
Thanks!

I have been a bit too broke for this stuff but the Edition X looks stunning to me. Prob the best looking hp out IMO. I called myself saving up for the Odin but some reports have me deterred. Also I am deterred from the Dharma because I want nothing close to thin. I sold my other gear for speakers and dont regret it, but I am missing a high end open back.

I'd save for this instead if it does the following:
HE 6 = bass quantity and impact
HE 560 < sensitivity
HE 560 < midrange quantity
A physicality to the music reminiscent of the 6 (of course it will be softer but please give us some weight)
HE 6 < soundstage
HE 6 > treble
HE 6 =/< treble extension

I'm sorry but the HE K is not reading like it's price. At 3G's it should be KILLING everything with ease.

Sounds like a dream wishlist. I doubt the HEX is what you're looking for.

With the except of bass quantity and impact, the HD800 (which according to your profile page, you've yet to own) would have the larger soundstage, better treble and far better treble extension and articulation, as well as more sensitivity and midrange quantity.

I would be satisfied with a bit deeper and fuller/fatter bass. To me the mod HE6 already has extended and detail highs. The highs is actually the thing I like the most on it, and it is many things too like.

Interested in more impressions on the HEX. Have only seen two so far, I think.

What is brighter an he6 or hd 800?
I think he1000 highs are what I am after. I dont need a Soundstage as big as the hd800.
I just like extension in treble, and neutral highs in balance. I can't do anemic bass. Even neutral heads call the hd800 bass light. I am hopeful for the he x

I'm not susceptible to bright headphones but I'd say the HE-6 seemed brighter to my ears.

The HD800 out of my vintage amps is NOT bass light in the least.

I'm listening to the HD-800 (loaner) tonight and my GS-1 w/ DACT-Dynalo+ Modules and find the bass to be fine with nice slam and no what so ever brightness/harshness at all. The HD-800 actually have an overall warm tone to my ears.

Hmm given that reports of the hd800 still having the technicality crown, and Oregonian calling it not bass light, i may go for that instead of the he-x
I found the hd700 too bright to me. So ill keep checking this thread to see impressions.
