HiBy R8 User Impressions

The R8 should theoretically allow any app to bypass Android's hamstrung audio layer that resamples everything to 16/48 regardless of bitrate. I was under the impression Tidal bypasses this restriction but I could be wrong. UAPP and HiBy Music definitely do. Wherever possible I listen to Tidal via UAPP, though you don't have access to Tidal offline content through UAPP.
Has UAPP added support for r8 ?

Can somebody here please explain what is the main cause of hissing on IEMs? Is it purely the impedance and sensitivity measurement (e.g. 16 ohm, 117 db) or does it also depend on the driver type and crossover network used?

I’ m asking since when I see the impedance and sensitivity of Ely and Erlky, both are shown to be almost identical, and yet @aaf evo experienced hissing w/ Erlky whereas @twister6 didn’t have any hissing with Elysium.

Thanks in advance guys.

I’m not sure on the specs but I used to own the Elysium also and it’s no where near as sensitive as the Erlkonig. The elysium needs power, like a solid 3x amount of power (rough estimate) compared to the Erlk so hissing is basically non existent with the Elysium.

Has UAPP added support for r8 ?

Actually many of the questions being asked are already answered before:

"So, downloaded the latest UAPP and looks like R8 support is in, with some small quirk that playing a FLAC file after DSD is most of the time not possible (interestingly, when I play a 88.2 kHz file it is back to normal). It is possible to play up to DSD512, Tidal and Qobuz natively on R8 (I am not sure about the MQA from Tidal - check the screenshot)."

It's a pain you can't access off-line content in UAPP. If I want to listen to some of my 9000 off-line tracks on a train journey...well forget it. And, yes, why can't Tidal show you what you're actually hearing. It's not a lot to ask really.

Using an external 4TB SSD is a good solution for big offline collections. You can directly access and play from the USB disk. If you don't want the stack, you can always copy from the SSD to your micro-SD card and play from there:

Is this a regular leather case that comes with R8? Though, I would have assumed you being an early adopter you should have brown leather Dignis case?

Looks to potentially have the same design issue as the Dignis case. Nothing to stop the R8 sliding down once it has stretched a little with use, therefore obscuring the button to move the track on.

That's the disadvantage of having the headphone ports at the bottom and having to keep the whole bottom facia open. Gravity is a b****.

True but they could have brought round just enough before the ports start and that would hold it. And they could have a side entry point like in the new ddhif case for the Cayin N6ii.

It is a Dignis case but a different color. I was surprised to see the color you guys have:

I think they didn't want to make the already thick DAP+case thicker. Two suggestions / workarounds:

- I hate the display protector delivered in the box - it is a finger print magnet. So I bought iPad matte screen protector film and cut out pieces for MAX and R8. From the remains, I did this (completely removing the slippery back protector and replacing it with a similar thick matte film might also be a good idea):

- Try using the screen rotation:

There is also the rotation control applications which helps you to fixed rotate the screen 180 degrees (there is automatic rotation, but 180 degrees rotation is not always working):

Balanced output, turbo mode and high gain is what I use to drive my D8000 Pro planar full sized HPs, and I can turn up the volume up to about 48% before it becomes too loud. Are you sure you are using your player the way it is supposed to be used with a 14 ohm 102 dB IEM?
It's definitely not necessary to power the LX but I just think it sounds the most dynamic, spacious and energetic this way compared to the other gain settings with the LX. Turbo mode with high gain sounds best with rock music on the R8 with LX while other genres fare better with medium gain. Then for a different experience it still sounds great without turbo mode.

Seems like Alex used med gain turbo mode on .While you had turbo mode on high gain. Maybe that will get rid of your hiss ?
Changing to medium gain definitely masks the hiss and I hear no difference in hiss between the R8 with turbo enabled and medium gain vs. DX160 in high gain. The hiss seems to come more from the recording and not a result of any added noise from the player. The R8 is a fantastic sounding player, especially when adding some subtle MSEB enhancements :) I find the Air MSEB setting creates a 3D holographic sound without being artificial if you set it 10-15 steps to the right. Still sounds natural with a huge sense of space.

How is R8 working with Amazon Music HD?

Does it makes any difference to buy the R8 directly from the HiBy Store instead of musicteck?

Thanks

It depends on where you live. If in North America, Musicteck is the best pick. Overseas, it could be Hiby. I would see what shipping is from each of them and go from there if you are not in North America.
