Hiby R3 Pro Portable Bluetooth DAP

Just received my Saber today, but oh my my, when coupled with the balanced Audio Technica MSR7bs, I've come to the conclusion that that combination is the best sounding portable setup I've heard in my 33 years of existence. The aggression, the close vocals, the hard hitting sub-bass, the details, the clarity...These characteristics have breathed new life into my music, and hearing songs I've heard countless times before has turned into a rejuvenated experience. As some of you might know, the MSR7b is lacking in bass compared to other closed headphones and the Saber's accented bass just makes it shine.

My, my, boys...I'm in love.

Nice depth on the sound stage too. Really impressive implementation of the chips. I've got 2 other devices that use the same dual sabre's and they just don't sound as good as the hiby. Hiby did a good job.

Tried updating Saber to 1.4 via card and it didn't work. Bummer.

Does anyone else here use the singled ended connection on their R3 Pro with a separate headphone amp like I am doing ? My Fiio A5 has perfect synergy with this DAP and the sound quality is just excellent. I have not tried the balanced out yet with my Fiio FH5 iems, as I currently do not have a balanced cable. I seriously doubt the balanced connection will offer a better sound than I am getting with the headphone amp paired with the DAP single ended though. I tested the 3.5mm jack on its own, and it was mediocre. With the headphone amp connected to it though, the sound quality improvement is gigantic.

You have a lot more available power on tap with the A5. I can imagine it sounds much better.

In that case, then, the R3Pro is really just functioning as a file browser/server, no? All the decoding and amplification is happening in the HipDAC. Theoretically, at least, pretty much any DAP (or phone or computer, etc) would sound equally good. I'm not arguing that it isn't an excellent combination - just pointing out that whenever you use an external DAC, the source device has little if any effect on the sound (aside from perhaps any very subtle effects of bitstream jitter or stability). The DAC and its amplifier determine the sound.

Unless the HipDAC has an analog input to function as an amplifier only, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't. ANyhow, I'm glad that combination is working well for you. I've considered the HipDAC myself for using with my phone or laptop, but probably wouldn't with my R3Pro, since that already contains an amp and DAC, and I don't need one more thing to carry around.

Just a thought - I know many people prefer to use external DACs with their DAPs - I wonder if anybody makes a "DAC-less" DAP for just that usage scenario. I'm imagining it as including display, storage, maybe WiFi, pretty much all the usual features, except that it only outputs digital. No DAC, no amp. It could be sold for probably half the price of a full player, and then the user can use the DAC/amp of their own choice.

Size of AP60 or M0.
Wifi/LTE-compatible.
Built-in app or AndroidOS or HibyOS.
LDAC-ready.
Recessed USB port.
>20 hour battery life.

Someone build this please, I might dust off my DACs/Amps for this :)

You have to do clone and reload the image before upgrading it. About 3- 4 pages back are the image file and instructions.

I think I'm just going to wait for Hiby to release signed drivers. Not to mention that I don't think I'm tech savy enough to be able to follow the directions mentioned in the post.

R3 Pro with the iFi Hip Dac is an amazing combo for MQA with minimal setup headache. The sound is perfect for me. Substantially better than the high-end Fiio DAPs (M11, M11 Pro, M15) that I’ve tried recently in combination with my LCD-3.

hip-dac is what's driving your LCD-3s?

I use the R3pro with a mojo. Perfect fit and the sound works well for me although at some point I will test it with my magni to see if there are any differences. My headphones are mostly the aeon flow cb originals.

If you have windows 10 its pretty easy. Well once you get windows to accept unsigned drivers that is

I had to do the restart and hold shift and pick f7 or 7 several times before it let me use the clone drivers. Then after that I just followed the instructions to reflash the bio.

Really only thing significant to me in that update was better bluetooth connection.

Might I ask where you got that cool green case?

Yes. Some time ago one of the members here posted his set up so I contacted him and convinced him to make me a case for the R3/Mojo along with another

Yes. Many months ago one of the people on the forum showed his R3/mojo setup that he created with a 3d printer. I asked him if he would nake a case and transport for me as well. If you want his email address I can get it for you.

1. Am looking for a high-end or mid-fi DAP with FM analogue radio. R3 Pro seems to offer only a web radio app that needs an internet connection via WiFi. So, I am just wondering, if a similar free web radio app with links included for hundreds of stations can be downloaded from Google PlayStore? If it can be done, I could choose on any other DAP (Cayiin N3 Pro or HiBy R8) over R3 Pro for my next purchase. Could someone tell me if it can be done?

2. Also, on R3 Pro, could the web radio presets be skipped from station to station using side buttons without needing to use the touch screen?

3. Any other DAPs that offer a similar web radio app as R3 Pro does but with better internals?
