Hey people, I’m pretty new to the world of high quality headphones and this is my first post. This hobby is expensive by the way! Well I need some help on picking between two choices to amp my headphones. I’m looking at the (very nice) Little Dot MKII and this Onkyo receiver: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-8255B-TX-8255-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B001AMSPQI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1300637766&sr=8-1

With shipping expenses on the little dot, the prices will be about the same. My source will mainly be my Audio-Technica AT-PL120 turntable connected with the rca jacks. I will occasionally use my Zune HD as well. For cans I’ll mainly be using my sr-80i’s (my tastes lean towards rock), but my Senn HD555’s will also see plenty of use. I enjoy listening to a lot of classic, alt, folk, and indie rock. I do also listen to some hip hop, jazz, and classical.

Now I’ve never listened to headphones through any decent quality amp, so I have no idea what I’d prefer between the tube and solid state sounds. I’ve read that tube is supposed to be warmer with a bit less accuracy and bass, but more “musical.” And the opposite goes for solid state? Please correct me if I’m wrong here. As for pros and cons that I do know of…

The onkyo has an equalizer I can use, which I was really looking forward to when thinking about a purchase. Also I would like the extra versatility of the onkyo in that I would get to attach speakers if I ever wanted to. However this isn’t hugely important since I can’t afford anything like that in the foreseeable future and I’ll be living in an apartment anyway. I will have to pay my own electricity though and I plan on running my turntable A LOT. I think the little dot has significantly less power consumption? I’m not great at understanding specs, but I think this was the case. If that will save me more money in the long run, then that would be a huge plus.

So I think that about covers all the relevant information. Sorry for the long post. I hope you guys can help me out. Thanks!

You could try to contact SKYLAB or one of the other senior members and they should be able to give You some real sound advice on this subject. Or You could look under the Head Gear section and do some research there.

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and got the little dot. I'm now curious about connecting my laptop to it using a connection besides the headphone out. I'm aware a DAC can do this. If I'm just going to use the RCA outs on a DAC without need for amplification, will a cheap DAC provide decent quality or will it just spoil my set up?

Since I do not use a DAC I could not help You there, I believe You could try and contact project86 and ask Him about this subject. You could try and send a message to Him and I believe He would help You with this.

with this, He should be more than able to assist You. I think Project86 has something up for sale, bad time for a PM.

it depends on what you mean by a cheap DAC but even a $100 would do you very well.  You really don't want to have to use a headphone out - you dont have a line out at all?  I think you would be very happy with DAC.  I still very much enjoy my simple e7 - I can't completely recommend it though since it doesn't have a line out until the LOD kit comes available in a month or so...

Yeah I don't have a dedicated sound card or anything. Just some digital outs and the usual headphone/mic outs. It's pretty lame. The E7 looks pretty interesting though. This is the kit you were talking about right? http://www.fiio.com.cn/news/index.aspx?ID=63

I assume I would just use a 3.5mm to rca cable to hook it up to a tube amp? Sorry I'm a newbie, but will the 3.5mm jack not mess with sound quality at all? I was kind of expecting rca outs instead, but if this does the job fine I'm all for it. I don't mind waiting that long until my next purchase anyway. Thanks much.

thats the one.  Yea, you loose the RCA outs when you go portable but you wont notice anything

.  It's  strange though that the e9 has a 3.5mm input instead of RCAs...
