Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution

And the LCD-2 isn't really a good example of neutral because there is such a steep drop off in the upper midrange. Change the point of comparison, and the bass response is FAR above neutral. It's uncolored, yes. But using it as an example for neutrality is misleading, to say the least.

Huh? I said its bass was perfectly neutral -- not the other frequencies. Just look how perfectly it follows the green line (flat speaker HRTF) in the bass. No idea what you meant about "the bass response is FAR above neutral", since it is measurably neutral.

A couple pairs worth looking at:
Audio Technica M50X
Shure 840

Both pretty neutral and quite durable. Good for recording, monitoring and some light mixing.

thanks - too bad the 840 costs twice as much as i'd prefer to spend. in that price range, i'd also find the beyer 770 quite appealing.

i'm leaning towards either the sony 7506 or the shure 440. any other suggestions around $100/100€?

Haven't heard the 440, but lots of people like it. I've had great results with the Sonys. They're not super detailed, but level balance is right on. Mixes translate very well.

I like the Beyers quite a bit, but I wouldn't rely on them for any mixing decisions. They have a significant coloration in the upper mids which can lead to bad decisions with your guitars... So I'd strongly recommend against them for your bedroom project. (Talking about the 80 ohm pro here, haven't tried the others.)

Except for those nasty treble peaks.

lol, I don't mean to keep "correcting" you, but I do have lots of experience with the 7506.

Not the frequency balance, but the levels of different elements in the mix.

Ah, I see. ...Er, actually, I don't. What do you mean by that? (Audiophile terminology preferred.)

If you mix a vocal or guitar, etc. to a certain volume on the Sony, it tends to translate pretty well to other systems. That's all I meant by that.

Listening to Ghost Love Score (the live single with Floor) and I'm going to say, yes, the Alpha Dog is nice for metal. The soundstage on these cans is hard to believe, given my past experience with closed headphones. They sound open. Symphonic metal really likes that, IMO.

After some Epica and ReVamp... Yes, these headphones are good. I think anyone in to progressive metal/symphonic metal/gothic metal would be pleased.

Have you heard the Denon D5000/7000? If so, is the bass comparable? With impact/amount and frequencies?

So I sold the HD 650 and want to save up so I can buy a HIFIMAN HE1000 from a friend of mine next month.

If that doesn't work out, would anyone care to make recommendations for the more affordable headphones on my gargantuan wish list (in spoiler) in the context of metal?
