HeadAmp Pico Portable Amp (w/ optional upsampling 24/96 USB DAC) Pre-Order Thread

I'd like to get a quick answer from someone that has heard this at the meet. I don't care about size, but I want to know how the sound compares with the Meier Corda Opera through its DAC? I know the Opera is more than double the price of this amp (with DAC), but I am curious to know please.

If one or two people can tell me that they think this amp sounds better, then you can count me in for a Pico with DAC. But I'd rather not preorder one until someone can possibly answer me.

Thanks! Great work Justin, your amp looks incredible, both design and size wise. From the reviews I've read, it sounds extremely exciting.

In terms of the Pico's DAC I can tell you that the WM8740 is a great chip - I've heard it in three CD players so far (Cambridge Audio Azur 640C V2, Arcam CD73, Arcam FMJ CD33) and have been impressed by all three. It's a high-end chip, used in many different CD players ranging from ~$700 all the way up to $3K. And based on specs alone the Pico looks impressive as it is. As I said before, sometimes you just have to make the leap! The people who haven't heard the Pico outnumber those who have and look how many pre-orders there are already!

Asr,
I do appreciate the response. I was just hoping people at the meet who have heard the Pico and the Opera might have been able to comment. Normally, I would take the leap, but I'm saving up for a high-end home amp. As you can see, I already have 3 portables and no home amp or DAC. If this amp (regardless of size) turned out to be as good, I would certainly get it instead. Unfortunately, I just don't $500 of blind faith when I'm saving up $1100 for a tried and true amp that has been thoroughly reviewed here.

That is why I was wondering if anyone could nudge my faith along, if you will.

Not counted all, but I'm guessing I might be pretty much the last one to put in a pre-order, or more likely, just one order too late? Would be just my luck anyway...

Anyway, as long as this works in linux, I want one with DAC please

I'm accepting an unlimited amount of pre-orders, but only the first ~75 will be able to get one in the first shipment. There are still about 20 more openings for the first shipment.

and yes, it will work in Linux

Since the Pico has one wolfson WM8740, are there any advantages to having 2 WM8740 (L + R)?
Does the Pico have the ability to resample to 24/192?

I would have to try it to find out...but that's something for larger home DACs. It's really not an option for the Pico because it would significantly increase the size, and also put the DAC over the 100mA current limit for low power USB ports.

I tested many resampling frequencies and ultimately liked 24/96 the best.

Justin,
Per my PM, please reserve me one Pico + DAC.

When will payments be needed, and when will the first amps ship?

reading justin's first post will get you many answers:

"I've made this thread to take any pre-orders for the Pico, which should be ready to ship sometime in November.

No payment is needed until the amps are ready to ship."
