So true!
Hence why all these HD800 vs. XX threads are pretty much pointless. Until its released and owners have been able to spend time with it...

No worries!
My β22 have 1x 4-pin XLR, 2x 3-pin XLR and 2x 1/4" TRS, so until I find a balanced cable the HD800 will run single ended.

Ah I didn't know you had TRS on the Beta. Well lucky you

how interesting. I've seen so many positive reviews about modded D5000's i.e. they sound better or as good as the Sony R-10.

It would be good to hear the other side as to level set expectations.

Not any of the three R10s I've heard, not really close

I don't see why the D5000 would be compared to the R10 in the first place, there is no similarity I've discerned - nothing about one that reminds me of the other.

How do they compare? Is the HD800 a significant jump or just a matter of preference over the AH-D7000?

Many preferred the sound of the denons (2000, 5000, 7000) over the sennheisers (600, 650). Will the new HD800 put sennheiser back on the top over the denons?

Any comments?

As several dozen people have already pointed out - a legitimate comparison is unlikely to surface for a long time. However, I am right along with you in wanting to eventually hear what others have to say about such a comparison. More specifically, what someone who primarily listens to heavy metal and rock have to say about the HD800s versus the D7000s (and maybe even the D5000s). Unless the HD800s can outdo (or are comparable) to the palpable Bass that the Denons are capable of (which I have serious doubts), I will likely stick with my D5000s, or perhaps finally pull the trigger and go for the D7000s.

Otherwise I am just going to have to try and find a way to hear the HD800s for myself.

Oh well - all speculation, hype and pipe dreams until the HD800s actually hit the streets. Until then, I'll stay tuned.

I also share similar findings. The R10 still a lot better than the MD5000 that I compared side by side.

You have to crank them to 11 like Markl does. Duh.

Biggie.

Looks like the HD800 purchase will be put on hold as I just swung for a pair of Denon AH-D7000. $545 compared to $1400 is no comparison for me. I'll wait a couple of years and see how the 800s settle in before I pick them up.

No question... it is quite literally impossible for the HD800s to be twice as good as the AH-D7000s... or MD5000s for that matter... or 4x as good as the HD580/600/650s.

Those that might think so... are simply deluding themselves... or... trying to justify their ridiculous investment.

"Diminishing marginal utility" is very real in audio.

We're really talking about "splitting hairs" with any of this.

That is essentially the same decision I made. $1400 is kind of a crazy amount - although I would have been able to return the HD800 if I somehow did not like it, I've spent MUCH more than $1400 on headphones and headphone-related equipment, and I've never sold anything. So, it probably would have been the best idea for me to just go ahead and get the HD800. Either that, or I need to start selling some of my stuff before I consider purchasing the HD800 years from now. I think I'll be much more likely to sell once I get my KICAS amp, since I'll know at that point that I've finally amped my dynamic headphones properly (the Total AirHead is as far as I've gotten in the headphone amp world).

Moreover, I think I'll love the sound of D7000. I've begun to value bass (both quality and quantity) and a more solid sound (as opposed to lean and delicate) much more recently, and if I can get "fun" and "hi-fi" at the same time, that is pretty much ideal.

I'm still looking forward to the eventual comparisons to see if the HD800 goes in the direction I'll want over the D7000. I kind of hope that it doesn't.

edited to add: Also, the D7000 being an outstanding all-arounder is very important to me, since I listen to classical (I generally dislike opera), jazz (mostly free), technical metal, various types of electronic music, rock and alternative, rap and hip hop, industrial, lots of experimental music of many types, etc.
