HD650's sub bass rolls off earlier than DT880 2005?

I don't know if something is wrong with my HD650 or not, but when comparing the sub bass response to that of my 2005 DT880 on sub-bass heavy tracks such as Massive Attack's 'Angel' - I can definitely hear more impact and quantity on the DT880's on the lowest of notes (such as the introduction bassline)...

Is that normal - does the 2005 DT880 have a better sub bass (not mid bass) response or is something actually wrong with my HD650?

I haven't heard the T880's so can't comment on them. I've know the 650's very well however and if you check out any 650 graph, the bass rolls off is very subtle. They are'nt bass heavy cans; that is, they don't have emphasized bass only natural and fairly accurate bass at sub level. (there is a slight lift in the mid bass)

There are a few options to help bring the bass out with the 650's for personal preference, a good cable replacement, or removing the foam from the drivers. The latter will bring out more bass but it spills a little.

I would give them a bit more burn in time, it may be that you are used to hearing a different kind of bass response from your beyers and it my take time to adjust.

Removing the foam won't get you more bass, rather the opposite. Turn down the treble and flatten out the bass a bit, loads of sub bass to be had that way.

but what about unmodded - what are your impressions f the sub bass between dt880 and hd650. Does anyone have any Massive Attack or similar bass reference material they could test it on?
