Probably thinking of the new/old HD650 with the changed diaphragm color.

If you dig up some old threads there are supposedly different versions of the HD 600s and HD 650s with different drivers. This is an unofficial change. I think there might be some truth to this because my 650s are not dark like most people say they are.

Ok...I may have my proverbial wires crossed here...

Some have said the 580s are the same as the 600s in many respects, dont think that there is much validity there but please Im open to your comments...

Only thing I know is that a HD600 Ive seen in real had a black/gray wanabe marble paint on it, and Ive seen some pictures where the HD600 had a wanabe blue/black marble paint on it.

It could be bad photography though... I dont know for sure.

I would imagine there are new HD600 version as well because my HD600 has silver mesh around the driver.  Since the HD650 used to have black silk, and now has silver mesh, I imagine the same thing happened with the HD600.  It seems unlikely that the HD600, having been made before the HD650 always used the material that they recently switched to with the HD650.  Also, I've owned 2 pairs of HD600 before, and I like this pair a lot better.  It doesn't sound as dull to me.  It could be my priorities changing, or compromising, or it could be the phones changing.

I also liked the silver mesh HD650 better than I liked them in the past.

There were many threads about it. I have just read one here:
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/318945/old-vs-new-hd580-600s-hd650s
and another one here:
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/340311/denon-d2000-v-new-version-sennheiser-hd600

There has been an article on the headfonia.com as well though it's not very popular within head-fi community (I think).

In general opinions vary. However, I believe there is some difference. I have a friend who had a pair of 'far too bright' HD600 which is exactly opposite of what majority states. I am now looking for reference-class headphones myself and have read many, many threads about such headphones, HD600 including. There were quite many opinions saying they are definitly not dark or veiled. Those opinions generally 'come' from posts written after 07/08 which according to the people who believe in the introduction of the new model is about the time of when the new version was relised.
(hope you understand this little speach. I tired a bit so can't write with 'nice and smooth' English)
