If the strength/loudness of the bass on ATH-M50 was a 10 in scale, how would it compare with the bass of HD600 and HD650? Has anyone had all three of these headphones before?

I have both the 600 and the M50. Bass is complete different as it is open vs closed headphone.
I'd call the M50s bass tighter, but the Senns bass has more thunder in it, it's rock 'n Roll!. I like both but if I had to choose I would defo go for the Senns.

I have to add that I never listen to the M50 on my main tube amp, the bass gets way too much for me, but could be good for a basshead.
I haven't heard the 650 yet, sry

Uh,, so you wouldn't go for the HD600 or is that a typo...How would you compare it strength/loudness wise? I know you said its difficult to compare but roughly? sorry for the trouble!

I'd have to disagree actually, I hear the opposite. Running them from my pc>fubar II>MSSH, and the hd600s have a "smurf" cardas cable.

The m50s have way more bass, and it has more decay, and presence, almost boomy sounding compared to the hd600s. I'd describe it having more "thunder" by far.  The hd600s have fast bass, it's there, it has great extension, it never intrudes on the midrange, and it's not as prominent. I like to compare the hd600s to the DBA-02s, they both have bass that's closer to the light end than the heavy end, but they definetly aren't bass light like the MS1s.

If you're expecting bass then I'd stay away from the hd600s. They were an upgrade from the m50s for me, soley because I fell in love with the DBA-02s sound signature. I wouldn't put them in the same league though, the hd600s do everything better imo, but they cost far more and need an amp to sound good.

Would you mind rating the bass of HD600 compared to M50's bass with M50's bass loudness/boomyness being 10?

Well it all depends on what kind of bass you want. Imo the M50s bass is punchier and more tight/controlled yes, but I really find the 600s bass to have the thunder and grunt (we might have other descritpions of these terms ;) ). It's completely different as it is open vs closed. It just depends what you prefer. I.ex for electronic music I would choose the M50s, but as said above, I'd pick the Senns anytime. You just have to use/get what sounds best to you, it's personal anyway

On loudness/bommyness scale I'd give the m50s a 7/10 and the hd600s a 5/10 and (for comparison's sake) the MS1s a 2/10. The m50s have powerful bass, it makes sure you hear it, while the hd600s' is more tamed. Overall I prefer the hd600's bass, it's just there in balance with the rest of the spectrum. The m50s' is noticeably more prominent, but I can imagine much more bass in a headphone. If you want lots of bass don't get the hd600s, they really are not a bass heavy phone (look at other reviews/impressions as well). The Hd650s are supposed to have slightly more bass, but I've never heard them myself.

I feel like I'm picking apart each headphone too much, they're both great. I loved the m50s and I would buy them again in a heartbeat if I needed a semi-portable headphone. I think you'll like the m50s, they do everything really well and sound great out of portable players. My millet hybrid definetly improved them as well, increased and tightened the bass a bit, and made them very warm sounding.

Though I wouldn't consider them in the same class, the hd600 is at least twice as expensive and needs an amp. If you're willing to spend that much maybe look at the ultrasone pro 900 or D2000.

I find it to be the complete opposite. The hd600s are much more refined in almost every way, and their bass is faster and tighter, the m50s maybe have a tad more impact. The 600s definetly have nice bass, but not nearly the same quantity as the M50s. Again though, I don't even think they should be compared really, the 600s are in a whole different league.

Ah, thanks for the comparison. Actually, the score you gave HD600's bass is close to what I've wanted to try out. I find myself thinking many times, 'you know, M50 could have a little less bass...' and the way HD600 goes down only 2 down the bass loudness scale paired with the famous lush midrange of sennheisers, I'm now very interested in listening to it.

As for the ultrasone and the denon, I'm still curious to try the "better bass," but what I learned from M50 is that I like some less bass and more midrange that can really allow vocals to shine. If I decide to buy another headphone, (not in the near future -_- as I have low budget as a student,,,) HD600 would be a closer bet, I'm guessing :)

I really wish I could drive to go to these MEETS!!!
